Should Parents of Obese Children Face Legal Consequences?

July 1st, 2009   (67 views )

The mother of a 555-pound, 14-year-old boy in South Carolina was charged with neglect last week for allegedly failing to control her son's weight.

Before fleeing town with her son, Jerri Gray had been contacted by the local Department of Social Services previous times about her son's weight and was even issued a treatment plan to turn around Alexander Draper's morbid obesity, Gray's attorney Grant Varner told ABCnews.com.

But when Gray failed to bring Alexander in for some of his medical treatment appointments recommended by the department and he continued to gain weight, the state sent notice that Gray would lose custody of her only child.

"She panicked," Varner said. "She had no lawyer, she couldn't afford a lawyer and they took off. They had no destination really. They stopped in Baltimore to do laundry, which is where they were found."

They should not face legal consequences. States should have better public clinics to address obesity. At best, parents should be told by the courts to bring these children to the doctor.

Obesity is child-endangerment. Health and eating habits are taught at an early age and parents should take a more proactive approach.

This is a socio-economic infliction - not negligent parenting. Poor families don't have access to affordable, healthy food and often resort to a diet of burger & fries. Making a law that punishes these parents discriminates against the poor.

Great idea to have these parents held responsible for their child's obesity. Just like the parent that indulges in the kids obession with video games, you are indulging them with food. If you don't have enough for health care, how can you afford all that food? If you really love them, teach them how to care for themselves with teaching them how to cook for themselves. Appreciation for good, fresh food is something that so many parents don't share with their children. With schools reinforcing bad eating habits with terrible food for school lunches, what else would families feed their kids? It's not expensive to feed your children good fresh food. It begins with the parent setting a good example and willing to eat well and live well.

What about the FDA approved ingredients such as corn syrup that are a cheaper form of sweetener that the body doesn't properly process. The processed foods that have shelf lives of anything over 6 months. the list goes on and it all boils down to the big corps. making profits, and the little guy who can't afford to buy real food. Fruits and veggies that don't have additives cost more. How can people who can't afford health care buy decent food for a family?

At what point is the government going to stop blaming citizens and assume responsibility for the grevious neglect they have perpetrated?

WHY DO WE STILL HAVE HUMAN GROWTH HORMONES IN ANIMAL FEED?

ANYONE WANT TO ADDRESS THE BLANKET OF ANTIBIOTICS GIVEN TO FEED ANIMALS WHILE HUMANS NOW FACE SUPER BACTERIA WHICH ARE RESISTANT TO ALL OUR CURRENT DRUGS?

Don't go after one single mother. The government needs to address their NEGLECT of the larger medical issues facing this country.

PATHETIC, RNN, STOP DOING THE ENQUIRER STORIES.

LET'S HAVE SOME REAL NEWS.

As a nation, we are obese. All the additives in our foods over the years have changed our body chemistry and have caused us to gain weight and have severe health problems. Is it ONE mom's fault? No, it is society as a whole for going along with the FDA. It is the FDA's fault for not protecting us in the first place.

How many of us have enough money to buy fresh fruits and vegetables daily? Canned or frozen is either full of corn syrup and sodium and who knows what other preservatives. The FDA should fix the REAL PROBLEM - what is allowed in our foods....the preservatives and fillers. Processed foods are JUNK....and our stores are filled to brimming with it.

Don't condemn ONE MOM for something SOCIETY has allowed to happen. If we are fat it's because no one cared 50 years ago...25 years ago....Who was in charge then? There was a time when we didn't need to label food because it was whole and natural and in its original form. And it didn't cost an arm and a leg because in Ulster County, we had vegetable and dairy farms, fruit orchards in the very spots we now have blacktop and shopping malls. We had bakeries and moms who could afford to stay home and pay attention to what everyone was eating because she'd be home to prepare it from scratch? What Price Progress?

Now, we are going green.....and everyone is on the bandwagon for healthy foods. It is expensive to buy "healthy" foods. The unhealthy foods are much cheaper.

Why blame ONE MOTHER? The woman making comments on your show indicates the mother of the fat boy should be punished!! Does she have a child/children? What is her salary? Does she work 3 jobs and is there money for fresh fruits/vegetables AND health insurance for her family? Does she know how much it costs to raise a child...to feed a child properly in this day and age?

How many parents are working more than one job just to survive? Who has time to pack wholesome lunches? I remember having a balogna sandwich or PB&J on white bread, an apple or banana, a devil dog and milk for lunch in Catholic School....the public school kids had fish sticks, green beans and french fries. No one knew about trans-fats or corn syrup woes.

COME ON FOLKS. Do you think all of us are idiots out here? Do you think we can't remember the past 50 years? ...that former President Ronald Regan labeled Catsup (a condiment) as a vegetable to serve in a school cafeteria. (On what? A burger and fries of course! Was the burger lean? what were the fries cooked in?).

Do you think I forgot what we were fed in public school....the cheapest of foods. So, you'd have to blame the US GOVERNMENT for making this kid fat as well. School kids eat worse today! What have they been feeding school kids over the past 25 years? Research that! Before you stick it to ONE MOTHER. think before you open your yap.

This is another stupid rnn question.
The kid is 550lbs!
He's not obese because he eats too much.
He has a major hormonal imbalance.
He has a medical problem.

The mother wasn't charge with neglect for failing to control her sons weight.
She was charged with neglect for failing to bring him in for MEDICAL treatment mandated by child protective services.

Now here's a good question RNN:

Will you complain to your Senators and Congress person about taxpayer funded trips?

From the WSJ:

"Congress's Travel Tab Swells
Spending on Taxpayer-Funded Trips Rises Tenfold; From Italy to the Galápagos"

WASHINGTON -- Spending by lawmakers on taxpayer-financed trips abroad has risen sharply in recent years, a Wall Street Journal analysis of travel records shows, involving everything from war-zone visits to trips to exotic spots such as the Galápagos Islands.

The spending on overseas travel is up almost tenfold since 1995, and has nearly tripled since 2001, according to the Journal analysis of 60,000 travel records. Hundreds of lawmakers traveled overseas in 2008 at a cost of about $13 million. That's a 50% jump since Democrats took control of Congress two years ago.

The cost of so-called congressional delegations, known among lawmakers as "codels," has risen nearly 70% since 2005, when an influence-peddling scandal led to a ban on travel funded by lobbyists, according to the data.

Lawmakers say that the trips are a good use of government funds because they allow members of Congress and their staff members to learn more about the world, inspect U.S. assets abroad and forge better working relationships with each other. The travel, for example, includes official visits to American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Journal analysis, based on information published in the Congressional Record, also shows that taxpayer-funded travel is a big and growing perk for lawmakers and their families. Some members of Congress have complained in recent months about chief executives of bailed-out banks, insurance companies and car makers who sponsored corporate trips to resorts or used corporate jets for their own travel.

Although complete travel records aren't yet available for 2009, it appears that such costs continue to rise. The Journal analysis shows that the government has picked up the tab for travel to destinations such as Jamaica, the Virgin Islands and Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Lawmakers frequently bring along spouses on congressional trips. If they take commercial flights, they have to buy tickets for spouses. If they fly on government planes -- as they usually do -- their spouses can fly free."

Hey RNN-How bout Immigration debate. You got alota play outa that last time.

Subject: Joe Legal and Jose Illegal

Hey.... This is Alive and growing in every state... Especially CA...

Joe Legal vs. Jose Illegal

Here is an example of why hiring illegal aliens is not economically productive for the State of California ...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You have 2 families..."Joe Legal" and "Jose Illegal". Both families have 2 parents, 2 children and live in California.

"Joe Legal" works in construction, has a Social Security Number, and makes $25.00 per hour with payroll taxes deducted....
"Jose Illegal" also works in construction, has "NO" Social Security Number, and gets paid $15.00 cash "under the table".

Joe Legal...$25.00 per hour x 40 hours $1000.00 per week, $52,000 per year Now take 30% away for state, federal tax
Joe Legal now has $31,231.00

Jose Illegal...$15.00 per hour x 40 hours $600.00 per week, $31,200.00 per year Jose Illegal pays no taxes...
Jose Illegal now has $31,200.00

Joe Legal pays Medical and Dental Insurance with limited coverage $1000.00 per month $12,000.00 per year.
Joe Legal now has $19,231.00

Jose Illegal has full Medical and Dental coverage through the state and local clinics at a cost of $0.00 per year.
Jose Illegal still has $31,200.00

Joe Legal makes too much money is not eligible for Food Stamps or welfare. Joe Legal pays for food $1,000.00 per month $12,000.00 per year.
Joe Legal now has $ 7,231.00

Jose Illegal has no documented income and is eligible for Food Stamps and Welfare. Jose Illegal still has $31,200.00 Joe Legal pays rent of $1,000.00 per month $12,000.00 per year
Joe Legal is now in the hole minus (-) $4,769.00

Jose Illegal receives a $500 per month Federal rent subsidy Jose Illegal pays rent $500.00 per month $6,000.00 per year.
Jose Illegal still has $25,200.00

Joe Legal now works overtime on Saturdays or gets a part time job after work. Cause he is in the hole.

Jose Illegal has nights and weekends off to enjoy with his family.

Joe Legal's and Jose Illegal's children both attend the same school.
Joe Legal pays for his children's lunches while Jose Illegal's children get a government sponsored lunch. Jose Illegal's children have an after school ESL program.
Joe Legal's children go home.

Joe Legal and Jose Illegal both enjoy the same Police and Fire Services, but Joe paid for them and Jose did not pay.

Don't vote/support any politician that supports illegal aliens..

Its PAST time to take a stand for America and Americans!
