As liberal protesters marched outside, Sen. Max Baucus sat down inside a San Francisco mansion for a dinner of chicken cordon bleu and a discussion of landmark health-care legislation under consideration by his Senate Finance Committee.
At the table on May 26 were about 20 donors willing to fork over $10,000 or more to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, including executives of major insurance companies, hospitals and other health-care firms.
"Most people there had an agenda; they wanted the ear of a senator, and they got it," said Aaron Roland, a San Francisco health-care activist who paid half price to attend the gathering. "Money gets you in the door. The only thing the other side can do is march around and protest outside."

HEALTH WIN = DISASTER FOR DEMS:

IF the Democrats obey President Obama's command and pass a health-care bill by the August recess, they'll be committing partisan suicide.

Obama's insistence that we completely remake our health-care system -- and do it two weeks after the first bill was marked up in the first committee -- is too arrogant by half. It smacks of the kind of overreaching of FDR's second term in 1937, when, after his landslide win in 1936, he tried to pack the Supreme Court to reverse its anti-New Deal rulings.

Americans are increasingly turning against Obama's program. A Washington Post poll has the plan's public approval below 50 percent; Rasmussen has it trailing 46-49.

For Obama to ride roughshod over Americans' rising concerns about a matter so intimate will be too much.

What's the rush? they'll ask. The bill isn't even slated to take effect until next year. You passed the stimulus package, they'll note, in a similar rush during the administration's first week -- only to see it fall flat. Now Obama aides are claiming the package was never intended to have much effect this year!

How, voters will ask, can we cover 50 million more people without any new doctors or nurses? The answer is to ration health care, with the government deciding who'll get hip and knee replacements, heart-bypass surgery and other medical treatments. And what does rationing mean? It means that the elderly will be denied care that they can now get whenever they want.

The Obama plan effectively repeals Medicare, putting a Federal Health Board between the elderly and their doctors. This board will instruct public and private insurance carriers on what procedures are to be approved, at what cost and for what patients.

The bulk of this rationing will fall on the elderly. We'll have to revisit the idea that the elderly have, in the words of former Colorado Gov. Dick Lamm, "a duty to die."

The more word gets out about what the bill contemplates, the firmer opposition will grow. That's why Obama wants to push it through now, while he retains some popularity.

And if the bill passes? The howls of protest from the elderly the first time they're denied care will be something to behold. It will become evident that the health-care resources being denied to the elderly are going instead to immigrants -- legal and not. The anger will be enormous and instant.

Most Americans aren't sick and don't use medical facilities often. But the elderly constantly stay in touch with their doctors and medical providers. The curtailment of that access will become immediately apparent -- and in more than enough time for the 2010 elections.

Some votes live on and on. People remember senators' votes on the Kuwait war resolution. President Bill Clinton chose Vice President Al Gore for the 1992 ticket largely based on Gore's vote in favor of the invasion. It sent a signal that Gore and he were a "new kind of Democrat."

This health-care vote is similarly consequential; it will linger for years.

WHY PREZ NEEDS 'REFORM' NOW:

WHEN Barack Obama pilfered Martin Luther King Jr.'s line about the "fierce urgency of now," he wasn't kidding. The line has come to define his presidency. His legislative strategy moves in two gears -- heedlessly fast and recklessly faster.

As with the stimulus package, Obama's health-care plan depends on speed. More important than any given provision, more important than any principle, more important than sound legislating is the urgent imperative to Do It Now.

Do it now, before anyone can grasp what exactly it is that Congress is passing. Do it now, before the overpromising and the dishonest justifications can be exposed. Do it now, before Obama's poll numbers return to earth and make it impossible to slam through ramshackle government programs concocted on the run.

Do it now, because simply growing government is more important than the practicalities of any new program.

The stimulus partly drives the rush on health care. The program was so ill-considered and so festooned with irrelevant liberal priorities as the price of hustling it through Congress that it becomes more of a drag for Obama every day. So health care has to be rushed through before Obama pays the full price for the failure of his previous rush job. Haste -- and waste -- makes for more haste.

Obama cultivated an image of cool during the campaign. Unrattled. Deliberate. Cerebral to a fault. Who knew he'd be in a panic to remake one-sixth of the economy by the first week of August of his first year in office?

Normally, the larger and more complex a bill is, the longer Congress takes to consider it. With the stimulus and cap-and-trade, Obama and the Democrats upended this rule of thumb by passing Byzantine, 1,000-page bills that no one had the time to read. When the work product is indefensible, deliberation is dangerous.

There's a touch of the guilty conscience about Obama's terrible rush. As if he knows he was elected as a moderate-sounding deficit hawk last year, and if he's going to pass an ambitious left-wing program, he must do it before the opposition builds.

Why else the mad dash? Obama noted in an interview with ABC News the other day that his health program won't be phased in until 2013. That's four years from now. The problem that Obama describes of rising health-care costs bankrupting the government is also a long-term issue, one that needn't be addressed in pell-mell fashion over the next two weeks.

But the longer Obama's health-care program marinates in the sun, the worse it smells.

Obama's signature line that anyone who likes his current coverage gets to keep it has been shown to be untrue in recent weeks. His rationale of passing a $1 trillion program to reduce costs is undermined every time the Congressional Budget Office analyzes a real Democratic proposal.

No wonder Obama wants to close down the debate before his rating on health care -- down to 49 percent in the latest Washington Post/ABC News poll -- drops any further.

Ramming through legislation without any assurance that it will work doesn't seem pragmatic or far-sighted. But for Obama's purposes, it is. His goal is nothing short of an ideological reorientation of American government. Putting in place the structures to achieve this change in the power and role of government is more important than how precisely it is accomplished.

The stimulus might not do much to stimulate the economy during the recession, but its massive spending creates a new baseline for all future spending. The cap-and-trade bill might not reduce carbon emissions during the next decade, but it creates a mechanism for exerting government control over a huge swath of the economy. ObamaCare might not work as advertised, but it will tip more people into government care and create the predicate for rationing and price controls.

Obama is an ideologue in a hurry. He wants to put American government on a radically different path.

Democrats encourage (despite what they "say") the murder of the unborn so why should it surprise anyone that as Bill F. has quoted:

"The bulk of this rationing will fall on the elderly. We'll have to revisit the idea that the elderly have, in the words of former Colorado Gov. Dick Lamm, 'a duty to die.'"

They won't be able to carry all the seniors on the medical rolls so expect incredible denials of service. Don't doubt it is coming just go above and read Big Bob's detailed analysis of the Healthcare Bill.

Before you tell me you are for Obama's healthcare, TELL ME WHY RICH CANADIANS COME HERE FOR MEDICAL TREATMENT.

Obama believes in getting rid of both ends of the life cycle as unproductive leeches on his vision of socialized America. He just isn't telling you about that just like he isn't telling you how bad the economic report really is although he is now saying his report can be delayed because Clinton and Bush didn't release theirs until August or September so what if he promised you the most transparent of Administrations he just throws off any criticism back on his predecessors claiming they did the same thing and so what if this is a run on sentence because Obama will just keep talking and talking and talking until you just accept what he says cause he has worn you down to a total frazzle and you just wave the white flag and say the America I knew and loved is GONE so I surrender and if you just deny my medical treatment I will be outta your hair and my misery. Amen.

Slow down or fight harder? How about stop and tackle the real problems with health care. Obama, being a disciple of Alinsky, will stir the pot even more. Confusion and turmoil are necessary to take the system down and rebuild it into his Marxist Utopia.

Before compromising our healthcare with this depleted pot of leveraged debts, put America and its people back on the path to economic and full production independence with the TARP money.

Increased taxes results in less revenues

It is absolutely mind boggling how people continue to confuse higher tax rates with higher tax revenues. Numerous pundits continue to argue that we need to raise tax rates to fund the growing budget deficit. But raising tax rates is one sure way of making sure the budget deficit grows even larger.

There are only two ways to shrink a deficit: 1) Spend less money. 2) Generate more revenue. Spending less money is a great idea, but given all the promises the government has made to various constituents, this is not likely to happen in the near future. Therefore, we must raise more revenue, but that will not happen by raising tax rates.

Higher tax rates are a recipe for reduced employment and slower economic growth (or a more severe recession). Time and time again, we have seen how tax rate cuts have spurred employment, economic growth, and tax revenues. Budget deficits during such lower tax rate/higher tax revenue eras are the result of uncontrolled spending, not the result of less revenue.

Politicians should be clear and honest. Tell us we need more tax revenue, not higher tax rates. Then lower tax rates to make sure we get the revenue we need.

Big Bob: Thne theory you pose is all well and good except for one thing. Most people have already scaled back and have stopped spending. the only ones who continue to spend and lavish themselves with our money is the banks.
1. They have unilaterally sucked up any and sometimes all of the "already earned equitys" that we the "working class" people had accrued.
2. Previously they bilked anyone and everyone they could scam into refinancing so as to enable themselves the privilege of expanded "leveraging" that took them from the 1:10- 1:14 model to their ponzi scheming speculation model that fell flat on its face.

...THEN CAME THE UNKINDEST CUTS OF ALL. THE BANKS TOLD EVEN THEIR BEST CUSTOMERS THEY WERE ON THEIR OWN. ON THEIR OWN TO MEET LOAN DEADLINES, WITHOUT THE COLLATERAL THEY THOUGHT THEY HAD TO MEET PAYROLL, PAY CREDITORS, OR EVEN EXIST.
... then came the job losses 15 million of them.

But, ... Never fear. The spending continues and the schemes that broke the system persist. AIG execs go on junkets for their clever ruse "handoff exchange" of $20b in TARP money to Goldman-Sachs. ...and Goldman employees split the money in bonues that would put 100,000 people back to work.
