Unlike football, baseball does not use instant replay to review calls. This means that the umpire's initial call is final. Unfortunately for Armando Galarraga, the umpire made a bad call that ruined his perfect game. However, the rules of baseball cannot be changed because Galarraga was stripped of a personal feat. But even if he will not be in the record books, he can rest assured that his near perfect game will not be soon forgotten.
There should be a way to correct the records so that one person's life is not changed because of this incident. The umpire should not be demonized, however. Umpires are human and they will make mistakes. Devise a way to deal with these human errors on the field.
This is the last straw. Most other professional leagues have some sort of replay system which has improved competition and fairness. There is no reason why MLB should not. The so called purists need to give up and accept that new technology can improve baseball. Travesties such as the one that occured last night in Detroit do not need to happen in the 21st century.
Erroneous calls are part of the game. A sportsman plays the call. Armando understands that and, to his everlasting credit, conducted himself accordingly.
That said, MLB is a business. It may be played by boys but these are boys with families to feed. MLB has a responsibility to see that they are paid for performance. They ought to use available technology to make the game as fair as possible.
The baseball rules CAN BE and SHOULD OF BEEN CHANGED LONG AGO, SINCE THE INVENTION OF MODERN TECHNOLOGY OF VIDEO TAPE IS MORE DISCERNING THAN THE UMPIRE'S EYE. IT IS BLACK AND WHITE!
Bud Selig never fails to meet the dead man walking quotient passing through his life in complete Walter Mitty mind numbing absurdity.
Lets give the Lord of Baseball the George W Bush award for brainless leadership once again, and watch Governor Jennifer Granholm set the record once and for all for this imbecile.
Normally the missed calls are a give and take which evens out and does not decide the game, so I don't have a problem with no replay. In this case however, it was one call that was clearly missed taking away a perfect game. The solution I think is to include the pitcher in the record books as pitching a perfect game with an asterisk that states umpire blew an obvious call...case closed.
I find it so hard to believe that it was only a month ago that i didn't know how to boil and egg and no i can actually cook dinner for my family instead of my wife always have to do it "cyber882
