Bullet Tracking: Helping Police or Hurting Gun Owners?

June 8th, 2010   (261 views )

New legislation in Albany would require, starting in 2012, that all new semiautomatic pistols sold in New York State be equipped with microstamping technology. It would allow police officers to quickly match empty bullet casings found at crime scenes to the weapons that fired them.
The gun lobby is pushing back hard saying it would be too expensive and steps on gun owner rights. So, we ask: Bullet Tracking: Helping Police or Hurting Gun Owners?

The problem has always been laws like this only hurt the legal gun owners
Do you really believe a gun used in a crime is registered??if so...put down the crack pipe

The question is: "Do you really believe a gun used in a crime is registered "to the perpetrator"????

How will the state defend me when a criminal picks up my spent shells at the range, or garbage picks them from my trash at the curb????

Bullet tracking is long overdue. There has been a real need to track shells for a long time and I'm glad there seems to be movement on this. The hurt to the gun owners is minimal and they should stop protesting in the interest of the greater good.

I believe that bullet tracking will be a huge advancement for New York state. People who use guns for crime shouldn't have the right to have a gun anyway. Using bullet tracking will make it much easier to track down criminals for the police's sake and I am for the legislation.

Did anybody think about the amount of handguns that are goign to come into the state to meet the demand of the criminals wanting guns?
PermalinkPermalink 06/08/10 @ 17:21
Comment from: Connie [Visitor] Email
I do believe this will help deter crime. If all bullets were registered with a tracking number,it wouldn't matter whether the gun is registered or not. It's the bullet that would be tracked. You need a bullet to hurt or kill someone with a gun.It would both deter and help catch criminals if they did use a gun.I'm all for it.Great idea that's long overdue.

The ignorance of some of these posts is astonishing. 1st, the BULLET is not the Casing! Fundamental difference, second, what criminal is going to have a gun registered to himself? Criminals cant buy or possess guns, unless there ALREADY STOLEN!

Greater good?? I'm not going to even stoop to respond to that..

Connie, if the gun is stolen, and the ammo is too(you cant buy hand gun or ammo w/o a permit for a handgun in that caliber) how on Gods green earth can the bullets be traced back to the perp?

This is pure fantasy.

CSI does NOT exist except on Television.

The level of ignorance of the people that support this type of fantasy legislation is astounding.

The last program the Albany NY brain trust passed (COBIS) has wasted over $30 million dollars and hasn't helped to solve a single case.

These pandering politicians must learn to stop attacking our Civil Rights.

We will remember in November.....

This latest infringement on our 2nd Amendment Rights is easily defeated with common household tools. Are these people stupid enough to believe criminals don't know how to use a file?

What happens when criminals collect your range brass and then leave it at their crime scene?

These politicians can't pass a budget yet can come up with this legislative garbage.

The ignorance of anti-gun supporters is truly amazing. Please understand, once and for all, that laws, rules, and controlling measures affect only the law-abiding citizen.

CRIMINALS ARE AND ALWAYS WILL BE CRIMINALS. THEY DON'T OBEY LAWS AND THEY WILL FIND WAYS AROUND THEM.

IF ALL CRIMINALS WERE KILLING THEIR VICTIMS USING VEHICLES, DO YOU PLAN ON BANNING THE SALE OF AUTOMOBILES? DO YOU PLAN ON PUTTING SOFT PADDING ON THE OUTSIDE OF THEM SO NO ONE WOULD GET "HURT" IF HIT? WHAT STUPIDITY COULD YOU THINK UP TO ALTER HUMAN BEHAVIOR? CRIMINALS BELONG IN CHAINS. NOT ON THE STREET. KEEP THEM IN JAIL. PROSECUTE ALREADY EXISTING LAWS. NO PLEA DEALS! HARD TIME.

CONTROLLING

"CRIMINALS ARE AND ALWAYS WILL BE CRIMINALS. THEY DON'T OBEY LAWS AND THEY WILL FIND WAYS AROUND THEM."

Since they are only putting it in the semi-automatic pistol, maybe the idea is for the criminal to think twice and avoid that weapon, favoring some other lessor power weapon during a crime that the police can easily overpower?

Or am I giving Albany too much credit for thinking that strategically?

PermalinkPermalink 06/09/10 @ 15:46
Comment from: Maggie Mama [Visitor]
Yes, Mike G. Way too much credit!

They can get machine guns if they want or didn't you see Scarface?

Britain has a NO guns policy. Even the police don't carry guns. So when the IRA went to war with them, they brought car bombs to London. How would you like bombs going off in the Bronx and Bed-Sty? More to your liking? These days we have the internet to teach people how to build bombs. One smart criminal could make a fortune making bombs for the drug gangs.

Then we would really see collateral damage!

I trust Albany to do NOTHING correctly. They are all morons. Both parties!

This is the best post on this topic i have ever read. The most glaring example of this type of spending is with all of the ads that air during the Super Bowl when just one minute of airtime can cost upwards of three million dollars.

What exactly does this new diet do. It takes your existing diet, reduces the portions if you are aiming at losing weight and also examines your meal time, making a few corrections here and there and it is done. The human body is fueled by carbs, fat, and protein.

Thanks for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love learning more on this topic. If possible, as you gain expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more information? It is extremely helpful for me. The reason that this is always the first song that comes to mind when I think about hits from the decade of the 1970s is because I was once sent a link to a web site that told you what song was number one on the Billboard charts on the day you were born.

You had fantastic good ideas here. I did a search on the subject and discovered almost all peoples will agree with your blog. Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case. This is an easier and more sensible approach.
