Palin vs Bloomberg: Who's Right When It Comes To NYC Mosque?

July 20th, 2010   (635 views )

ABC News - Sarah Palin's inflammatory tweets calling on New Yorkers to "refudiate" a planned mosque near the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks has made her both a satirical target and a thorn in the side of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
The former Alaska governor took to Twitter Sunday to oppose the city's plans for the mosque, already a source of heated debate in New York.

After Palin tweeted "peace-seeking Muslims, pls understand, Ground Zero mosque is unnecessary provocation; it stabs hearts," Bloomberg shot back.

"Sarah Palin has a right to her opinions, but I could not disagree more. "Everything the United States stands for and New York stands for is tolerance and openness."

Daisy Khan, a spokesperson for the community center that will include the mosque, said Palin's stance "raises the very question of what is at the heart of all this furor and that is ignorance."

In my opinion, most of what Mayor Bloomberg stands for, is not in the best interest of American's or New Yorker's because of his biased point of view. He appears to have tolerance and openness toward what he values but not the values of the majority.

When asked who it was that planted the bomb in Times Square and possible motives, it is what he does NOT say that speaks the loudest:

“Home-grown, maybe a mentally deranged person or somebody with a political agenda that doesn’t like the health care bill or something. It could have been anything."

It seems like a lot of the people enraged about this mosque business don't even have the facts straight, like Palin. Anybody who takes two seconds to Google the plans will see that it is not meant to be ON the site itself, but 2 blocks away.

What has society become, where we jump on an issue without even bothering to look up ANY of the facts?

The location of the mosque IS NOT on the site where the twin towers stood.
This issue has been blown out of proportion. Doesn't the United States of America stand for peace and liberty?
Sarah Palin's comment is exhibiting contempt and frighting ignorance, granted that this woman was close to being our Vice President.

As an American citizen, born and raised in Philadelphia, Pa, and as an African American descendant of former slaves in this country, I am the beneficiary of the goodness of the Quakers, who fought for their own religious freedom, and who also fought to end the 'peculiar institution of slavery". This country was built on the principal of religious freedom. I am a Muslim and I love this country. I am not one of "them" as the so called patriots like to call muslims. I am one of us. How many mosques are there in New York City that have been there for years? I remember going to Malcolm Shabazz Mosque in Harlem back in the late 1970s. Its still there. Our political leaders should demonstrate the best of what we as a country have to offer, not the worst. Ms. Palin seems to want to go back to the past days of blatant racism and hatrid. Love is the answer. Real Muslims are about truth and peace. Peace does not make the news. Islam is relatively new here in America, compared to Christianity and Judaism. Information, however, is way more easily attainable vie the Internet. Information dispells ignorance. We must refudiate ignorance in our bemunity.

Someone asked how would we no if we are winning in afganistan? The Taliban, attack long standing monuments of any culture but their own.I have read the Qu'ran, as well as the bible from cover to cover.According to both books, monuments are are signs left behind by God,so that we "can know one another, not so that we will despise one another."The qu'ran is very clear, their will always be those who dont believe, there will always be Non Muslims.Muslims who think they will remove all who dont think as they do,are going against the will of God.So long as the pyramids are standing in egyt, The U.S.A. Has won the war.The Taliban started by desroying the ruins of the mongolians, imagine the many sights, they would destroy if God did not bless the U.S.A.BLOOMBERG, BEATS Palin, worst than Barrack did.Now we no why their are no Grizzly moms in the Desert.

Taquiya-Falsehoods told to prevent the denigration of Islam, to protect oneself, or to promote the cause of Islam are sanctioned in the Qur'an and Sunna, including lying under oath in testimony before a court, deceiving by making distorted statements to the media such as the claim that Islam is a “religion of peace”. A Muslim is even permitted to deny or denounce his faith if, in so doing, he protects or furthers the interests of Islam, so long as he remains faithful to Islam in his heart.

Please stop calling it a Mosque. The plan calls for a huge community center with a small prayer room. These Muslims have been part of Lower Manhattan for decades. Some were killed during the terrorist attacks and some were first responders. Our community board voted unanimously in favor of the Community Center and this is a vote by the citizens of Ground Zero. The right wing racist outsiders who are trying to make a political point at the expense of peaceful Muslims should butt out and allow the good citizens, Jews, Christians, Buddhists, Muslims, Atheists, whatever of Lower Manhattan to heal in a peaceful manner.

Aw, this was a really quality post. In theory I'd like to write like this too - taking time and real effort to make a good article... but what can I say... I procrastinate alot and never seem to get something done. If you add crown moulding to the top of a very basic, simple room, you can make it seem a little smaller and more cozy.

A lot of whatever you articulate is astonishingly legitimate and that makes me wonder the reason why I hadn't looked at this in this light before. This piece truly did turn the light on for me as far as this topic goes. Nonetheless there is one issue I am not necessarily too comfortable with so whilst I make an effort to reconcile that with the actual central theme of the point, allow me see exactly what the rest of your readers have to say.Well done.
