Controversial Mosque Moving Forward: Right or Wrong?

August 3rd, 2010   (429 views )

NEW YORK (AP) - Mayor Michael Bloomberg is praising the decision
by the city's landmarks commission clearing the way for a mosque to
be developed near ground zero.
He joined City Council Chair Christine Quinn and several
religious leaders to reiterate his support for the mosque, which
has drawn criticism from some Republicans and family members of
those who died in the Sept. 11 attacks.
Bloomberg said the firefighters and other first responders who
died in the attacks had done so to protect religious freedom.
He acknowledged the emotional debate around the matter but said
it would settle once the mosque is built.
He said the city had not been torn apart by the controversy and
would be stronger for it.

I have tried and tried but I still dont understand what the outcry is about. It's two blocks away and it used to be the Burlington coat factory. Let them build it - who knows? It might actually help in preventing people from painting all Muslims with the same brush.

.. Its not about building a mosque, its about bldg it on ground zero and almost sacred grounds!

.. Build it midtown, uptown, somehwere else but not there. We make laws to not have new restaruants or strip bar types through zoning laws, this has been done for YEARS!! --- yet there is silence on this?

.. Its just so damn insensative, a word the left "LOVE to toss around", would u build a temple in Mecca? What about something at Pearl Harbor? noooo so why here?

.. Again no problem with them building a mosque by are they so hellbent on building it there? Sad

"Top 5 Social Security Myths

Myth #1: Social Security is going broke.
Reality: There is no Social Security crisis. By 2023, Social Security will have a $4.6 trillion surplus (yes, trillion with a 'T'). It can pay out all scheduled benefits for the next quarter-century with no changes whatsoever.1 After 2037, it'll still be able to pay out 75% of scheduled benefits—and again, that's without any changes. The program started preparing for the Baby Boomers' retirement decades ago.2 Anyone who insists Social Security is broke probably wants to break it themselves.
Myth #2: We have to raise the retirement age because people are living longer.
Reality: This is a red-herring to trick you into agreeing to benefit cuts. Retirees are living about the same amount of time as they were in the 1930s. The reason average life expectancy is higher is mostly because many fewer people die as children than they did 70 years ago.3 What's more, what gains there have been are distributed very unevenly—since 1972, life expectancy increased by 6.5 years for workers in the top half of the income brackets, but by less than 2 years for those in the bottom half.4 But those intent on cutting Social Security love this argument because raising the retirement age is the same as an across-the-board benefit cut.
Myth #3: Benefit cuts are the only way to fix Social Security.
Reality: Social Security doesn't need to be fixed. But if we want to strengthen it, here's a better way: Make the rich pay their fair share. If the very rich paid taxes on all of their income, Social Security would be sustainable for decades to come.5 Right now, high earners only pay Social Security taxes on the first $106,000 of their income.6 But conservatives insist benefit cuts are the only way because they want to protect the super-rich from paying their fair share.
Myth #4: The Social Security Trust Fund has been raided and is full of IOUs
Reality: Not even close to true. The Social Security Trust Fund isn't full of IOUs, it's full of U.S. Treasury Bonds. And those bonds are backed by the full faith and credit of the United States.7 The reason Social Security holds only treasury bonds is the same reason many Americans do: The federal government has never missed a single interest payment on its debts. President Bush wanted to put Social Security funds in the stock market—which would have been disastrous—but luckily, he failed. So the trillions of dollars in the Social Security Trust Fund, which are separate from the regular budget, are as safe as can be.
Myth #5: Social Security adds to the deficit
Reality: It's not just wrong—it's impossible! By law, Social Security's funds are separate from the budget, and it must pay its own way. That means that Social Security can't add one penny to the deficit.

I think that if muslim groups were to publicly and consistently denounce the events of 9-11 with the same passion that Americans protest this insane mosque placement, then perhaps Americans would be more trusting of members of this religion. Until then, it is hard not to paint them with the same brush.

There was a landmark 100 year old Greek Orthodox Church, St. Nicholas that was completely demolished when the twin towers came crashing down on it on 9/11. The church community has been attempting to seek approval for its reconstruction for almost 10 years now but it has been caught up in NYC and Port Authority politics that evidently decided it is not their top priority.......yet this extremely controversial Mosque was able to jump ahead in line for the NYC Council's and Mayor's attention over this long established Christian Church. Somethings rotten in Denmark(NYC).

I need to know why do they need two mosque why can't they be happy with one near ground zero...please can someone answer this question???

Doug, forget looking for "fair and balance" from French, Drew or RNN they are as bias as they come.

The other day they had the question about "who do you trust in the midterm?" At the time everybody posting said Reps or Independents. On T.V.three people called in, all wanting the Dems. They had a poll question "who would you vote for in Nov?" 46% said Dems 43% said Republicans. They showed a clip about Jackass Weiner vs King regarding the 9/11 victim Bill that failed. They edited it so you never got to hear Peter King's reasoning. During the Haiti hurricane French droned on about prosecuting the people who took the Haitian children out of the country. I guess they were innocent since you never heard anything else about it from French. Last year almost everybody he interviewed on the phone was in favor of Obamacare.

I mean, Fox News may be bias the other way but at least they mix in some alternate views for debate. RNN in my view, is strictly a one sided propaganda machine and French leads the pack.

Just putting this out there:

"What began peacefully ended in aggression and conflict.

European settlers subsequently drove the Indians from their lands as settlers moved westward. Treaties were often drawn up after Indian leaders were plied with alcohol. Whether through intimidation, war, treachery, or outright fraud, the Native Americans were systematically dispossessed of their lands. "

More FYI:
"In 1807 the British Parliament passed a bill prohibiting the slave trade. In January the following year the United States followed suit by outlawing the importation of slaves. The acts did nothing to curtail the trade of slaves within the nation's borders, but did end the overseas commerce in slaves. To enforce these laws, Britain and the United States jointly patrolled the seas off the coast of Africa, stopping suspected slave traders and confiscating the ship when slaves were found. The human cargo was then transported back to Africa.

I called your show yesterday and you had cut me off so obviously before I could finish my thought. The islamic faith has produced thousand of terrorists/Islamic findamentalists who would act violently against America if given the chance. From the 1993 bombings until now we have lost thousands of American civilan lives at the hand of some of these extremists. Since such a large number of lives have been lost in the name of Islam(And its more than just a few extremists there so many islamic terrorist groups)I think its time our government stopped hiding behind freedom of religion and investigate further into why so many extremists are a product of Islam. I am not saying to ban a particular religion but there must be something that can be done to stop teaching vulnerable young muslims into becoming hateful and possible, murderers.

Robt: Thanks for the Walvin link.

"Just drawing on our own history in this country,of how a race of people were treated by our own.

Walvin quote: "Before abolition however, there was that highly racialized form of slavery devised by Europeans for the conquest and development of key regions of the Americas. Satisfying the voracious appetite of American plantations required the enslavement and oceanic transportation of millions of Africans.

Europeans turned to enslaved labour in the Americas (at the time they had abandoned it in Europe) not for any ideological or philosophical reason. The demand for labour was generated by the emergence of labour-intensive plantations producing tropical staples for western consumption. But why Africa? And why slaves?

(The word 'slave' is rapidly losing favour among historians; 'enslaved' is becoming the word of choice, even though it creates enormous complexities of expression.)

Early European maritime adventurers and traders to West Africa went not in search of slaves, but for well-known African commodities (especially gold) traditionally acquired via overland trade routes. But in the process, they encountered forms of African slavery and slave trading. They bought Africans, shipped them back to Portugal and Spain, later to the Atlantic islands, where they were slotted into a number of roles as enslaved roles. By the mid-fifteenth century about eight hundred Africans a year reached Portugal. Europeans still remained much more interested in gold and spices, but all this changed with the rise of sugar plantations."

-Slavery is and was, an African cultural and economic tradition. The 15th century Europeans "adopted" those traditions. Two wrongs dont make a right but:

-at that time, any 'slave' that was brought to the Americas, was a 'slave' already in Africa.

Church Destroyed on 9/11 Still in Shambles:

While a mosque is one step closer to being built in New York City blocks away from Ground Zero, a church that was destroyed in the 9/11 attacks has yet to be restored.

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church stood in the shadow of the Twin Towers and was crushed when the South Tower collapsed.

George Demos, the Republican candidate for Congress in the First District of New York, called the delay in rebuilding the church a disgrace and blamed the Port Authority for the hold up.

Click play for more from Demos on why he's outraged this church has not been cleared to be rebuilt yet, and why it must be allowed to "rise from the ashes" of 9/11.

"What an outrage that our government has put roadblocks in the path of its own citizens trying rebuild their beloved church destroyed by Islamic extremists," he said.

"[This is done] while Saudi Arabia, a nation that prohibits people from even wearing a cross or the star of David, now provokes the families of those who lost loved ones by apparently funneling money to build a mosque at the same location."

The church was supposed to be relocated to a nearby site in a land swap deal with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Demos says the project has been mired in bureaucratic red tape for most of the last decade.
