West Point Cadet Comes Out and Drops Out: Is It Time to End "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"?

August 13th, 2010   (8783 views )

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) - A lesbian cadet asked to resign from the
U.S. Military Academy because she said she can no longer lie about
her sexuality and was troubled by the anti-gay attitudes of some
around her.
Katherine Miller of Findlay, Ohio, also said she wants to fight
for repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" law, a subject she was
studying and writing about as a sociology major at West Point.
"I intend for my resignation to offer a concrete example of the
consequences of a failed law and social policy," she wrote in her
resignation letter on Monday, referring to the law against gays
serving openly in the military.
Miller wrote proudly of her accomplishments as a student,
athlete and soldier and said that she had not been pressured by
anyone to resign. But she wrote of being "coerced into ignoring
derogatory comments towards homosexuals for fear of being alienated
for my viewpoint" and that she "endured sexual harassment for
fear of being accused as a lesbian."
Miller said by e-mail that she wasn't immediately available to
speak with The Associated Press on Thursday, but she confirmed the
resignation letter.

If in fact she could not cope, then she did the right thing. What would really make more sense: 1 gay person feeling "uncomfortable" or the other 10 straight cadets feeling "uncomfortable"?
Does the majority have ANY rights?

Bad cases make bad law. This is a bad case.

That said, the policy and the attitudes are destructive. They deny the services men and officers that are valuable, not to say, dear.

President Obama was elected in part to end this policy. It is time.

There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game.

While this subject can be very touchy for most people, my opinion is that there has to be a middle or common ground that we all can find. I do appreciate that youve added relevant and intelligent commentary here though. Thank you! However, as science and medicine have evolved, the concept of a balanced diet has changed.

The very crux of your writing whilst appearing reasonable initially, did not really settle perfectly with me after some time. Somewhere throughout the paragraphs you were able to make me a believer but only for a very short while. I however have a problem with your leaps in logic and one might do nicely to help fill in those gaps. In the event that you can accomplish that, I would definitely be fascinated.
