What Are We Fighting About? : Mosque Location or Islamic Faith?

August 16th, 2010   (432 views )

(AP) - A White House spokesman says politics wasn't a factor in President Barack Obama's remarks about building a mosque near the site of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in
New York City.
Deputy White House press secretary Bill Burton said it was "not politics" but Obama's feeling that he had the obligation as president to "make sure people are treated equally" under the Constitution.
Obama has said that religious freedom allows the mosque to be built, but without commenting on the wisdom of building one two blocks from ground zero. Republicans have pounded him for his comments, making it a prime midterm election issue.
Burton said Obama "felt it was his obligation as president to address this." Obama was on the way to Wisconsin for fundraising.

I wonder how the Japanese would react to a staue of Pearl Harbor or a monument to our victory on Iwo Jima?

Now, do you get it? Where is their sensitivity?

The Muslims don't allow Christian houses of worship in general and as a matter of fact in the vast majority of Muslim dominated countries. Muslims are very oppressive towards other religions,.even the so-called secular Turkey discriminates against Christians and Jews.

There is a deep and esoteric meaning to "Cordoba" house, I suggest you go research the symbolism of it. It's their (the Muslims) way of planting a flag of "reconquista" on American soil and a stone's throw from the towers. What a disgrace.

"IF" the mosque is built,I can see this location being a flashpoint for future confrontations and continually problematic for NYC. Tons of overtime for cops to protect it 24/7 and paid by OUR tax dollars????!!!! Street blocked off, disruptions to business and pedestrian ingress and egress etc.

A bad idea sponsored by bad radical muslims, end of story.

I think that people who oppose the mosque fail to understand that what happened on 9/11 is not Islamic. Most muslims are embarrassed by that association. Islam is a religion of peace. A huge gang of idiots used it and defined the religion the way they saw fit. They used it as an excuse to kill and it's embarrassing for muslims everywhere that non-muslims can't see through that.

People are not trusting of the Islam religion. Obviously all Muslims are not terrorists but most acts of terrorism are done by the Muslims in the name of their religion. Look at what has happened in Europe. Innocent people have been killed by Muslims for writing something about Allah. The Islam religion does not seem tolerant of other religions or people who disagee with it. Who is funding this mosque?

I think that it gets sensitive due to the location, I used to work there, walk , eat and conmmute at the WTC, now is gone because some nuts using their religion as a right to kill 3,000 americans. But I think the president is right that we are an icon in the world that allows people of all faiths to worship and build their temples as long as they follow the law of the land.
I alwsys think that this group needs a leader like we catholics have the pope , one that will derrogate the use of their religion as a tool to hire or brain wash people to kill themselves .Also they need to evolve, very radical , a catholic could become a muslim, but a muslim could not change religion. Is a broader subject , but I do understand the president, let;s hope that we do not turn like them , radicals to minorities or religious sects...God bless this country and it's people..

For what it is worth:

There's a Mosque at the Pentagon, Oh My!
by: lowkell
Fri Aug 06, 2010 at 14:34:20 PM EDT

For all the anti-Muslim bigots out there - Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin, and the whole crazy lot of 'em - read this and enjoy as their heads explode from cognitive dissonance overload!

Navy imam Chaplain Abuhena M. Saifulislam lifted his voice to God as he called to prayer more than 100 Department of Defense employees Monday at a celebration of Ramadan at the Pentagon.
God is most great, sang the lieutenant commander and Islamic leader, in Arabic, as iftar - the end of the daily fast began.

Uniformed military personnel, civilians and family members faced Mecca and knelt on adorned prayer rugs chanting their prayers in quiet invocation to Allah.

Wait, a mosque? Inside the Pentagon? Which was attacked on 9/11? That's ok, but a cultural center on private property, several blocks from "Ground Zero" in NY City, must be "refudiated?" Yeah, right, gotcha! As Salon Magazine snarkily writes, "Yes, Muslims have infiltrated the Pentagon for their nefarious, prayerful purposes -- daring to practice their religion inside the building where 184 people died on Sept. 11, 2001. They haven't even had the sensitivity to move two blocks, let alone a mile, away from that sacred site."

Ground Zero Mosque Madness: NYC Mayor Bloomberg’s Bloomberg LLC expanding its financial center to a regional hub in Dubai

..Bloomberg’s demands of religious tolerance from his city’s citizens is inconsistent in a city with 100 mosques already in operation but with a school system that will not acknowledge Christianity or Christmas, or even allow the repairs necessary for the Greek Orthodox Church, St. Nicholas, to go forward nearly a decade after it was crushed by falling debris from the Twin Towers themselves....

...Paralleling Mayor Bloomberg’s veiled insults towards those acutely aware of the historical Islamic conquest of non-Muslim lands by their building of mosques on top of or dominating a conquered people’s holy sites, is the concurrent Bloomberg LLC’s expansion of its Dubai financial center into a regional hub for the UAE......

What is really interesting is all of the folks defending that the Mosque should be built. Yet not a peep about the Greek Orthodox Church that was destroyed in 911 at the site that Mr.Blooberg will not allow to be rebuilt. It just goes to show the anti-Christian views of the left.

The fight isn't about religion or proximity-- it's about losing grasp of America. Citizens are still not only hurt from 9/11 (and rightly so), but we feel taken advantage by our government. Saving Sallie Mae, Frannie Mac, GM... all with our money and without our consent. The oil spill cost thousands of jobs and our coast line... none of which we asked for. And now, building a Mosque just two blocks away from Ground Zero... it just seems like another slap in the face.

Being a muslim, isn't it convenient for Obama: "It was "not politics" but Obama's feeling that he had the obligation as president to "make sure people are treated equally" under the Constitution"

Only 9 years since 911, but sixty-eight years after WWII--how would Bloomburg and the Jews feel about a German church being built TODAY, on or adjacent to the concentration camps in Germany? Haven't the Jews forgotten by now?

Church and state are separate in religions in the United States, but the muslim relgion combines church and state. Muslim religion is the enemy from within, and US citizens never know if and when they will turn on Americans, again, e.g., Fort Hood masacre, etc.

There is no dedicated mosque inside the pentagon. There is an all faith-interfaith prayer room, built at the location where the plane hit the pentagon.

Individuals, Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Buddest, Moslem, Christians, Wiccans, ect ect ect, use it. Because muslims use it for prayer, does not make it a mosque.

Only the very next day, POLITICIAN Obama-without a tele-promptor- makes a gaffe about the wisdom of buiding the above proposed mosque.

Wisdom???? When is it, (or is it not) 'Politicaly Correct' to execise ones relegious, first ammendmant rights?

One day Barack is a great lawyer and speech maker. The next day he is a crappy, gaffing politician, that without a tele-prompter, is down right dangerous.

On the one had I completely understand the sentiment from innocent Muslims that express those Islamic extremist do not represent their views and have nothing to do with them, so why not build the Mosque? On the other hand, I understand the sentiment of those opposing building a NEW Mosque in that location, since the terrorists extremist came from that religion and it could be a hurtful reminder and insensitive to the victims families.

I guess I don’t understand why those building the Mosque do not recognize the insensitivity and simply decide to build the Mosque elsewhere? I would not want Bloomberg or the President in our free society, to use authority to try to stop the building of the Mosque but if they were truly fair and balanced they might encourage them to build it elsewhere.

Why is it that Boomberg “thinks” he can dictate all types of rules from changing his term limits to the use of salt yet he stops short here? How can authorities pick and choose who should have certain rights and when? The potential car bomb in Times Square is said by Bloomberg to possibly somebody from the Tea party that was unhappy with the healthcare but he refuse to say it could also be an Islamic terrorist. Why does Pelosi care about who is funding the opposition to the Mosque, instead of who is funding the building of the Mosque?

Perhaps, if we believed our leaders were willing to speak up and act against all wrongs committed by any group, we all would be a little more open to our own faults and less defensive. Our political leaders want to appear fair on the outside but by both their actions and inaction's they seem very bias in my view.

"Forty different Catholic, evangelical, mainline Protestant, Jewish and Muslim leaders and scholars came together to release a statement condemning the hate language of Fox News, Sarah Palin, and Newt Gingrich as it relates to the so called Ground Zero mosque, “Fear-mongering and hateful rhetoric only undermine treasured values at the heart of diverse faith traditions and our nation’s highest ideals.”

The statement released by Faith In The Public Life condemned the religious bigotry of Gingrich, Palin, and Fox News, “As Catholic, evangelical, mainline Protestant, Jewish and Muslim leaders and scholars committed to religious freedom and inter-religious cooperation, we are deeply troubled by the xenophobia and religious bigotry that has characterized some of the opposition to a proposed Islamic center and mosque near where the World Trade Center towers once stood.”

Glenn Beck’s Revival:

August 29, 2010

They came for many reasons — to see Sarah Palin, to pray, to hope, to socialize — but come they did. Hundreds of thousands of Americans gathered at the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, lawn chairs and Gadsden flags in hand, to participate in “Restoring Honor,” a nonpartisan rally hosted by Glenn Beck, a Fox News host.

In a surprise appearance at the FreedomWorks conference in Washington on Friday, Beck had explained why he decided to spearhead what was, in many respects, an ecumenical revival. “My role, as I see it, is to wake America up to the backsliding of principles and values and most of all of God,” he told the assembled conservative activists. “We are a country of God. As I look at the problems in our country, quite honestly, I think the hot breath of destruction is breathing on our necks and to fix it politically is a figure that I don’t see anywhere.”

The following morning, as Beck’s event opened, soft piano notes swelled from gargantuan loudspeakers as images of America — purple mountains’ majesty, oceans white with foam — slowly streamed across the high-definition video screens positioned around the Memorial grounds. Then, to a great roar, Beck took the stage. “Something that is beyond man is happening,” he said, his voice echoing all the way to the Washington Monument. “America today begins to turn back to God.”

Beck’s opening theme, calling the assembled to embrace God and remember the traditional, foundational values of the country, was carried on by the ensuing speakers. Calls for unity and inspiration were ubiquitous, interspersed with history lessons, personal testimonials, sermons, and a bit of country music — John Rich and others performed. “For too long, this country has wandered in darkness,” Beck said, gazing out toward the reflecting pool. “This country has spent far too long worrying about scars and thinking about scars and concentrating on scars. Today, we are going to concentrate on the good things in America, the things that we have accomplished, and the things that we can do tomorrow.”

Beck’s healing message also included numerous citations of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech at the site 47 years ago to the day. Dr. Alveda King, a niece of the civil-rights activist, was a featured speaker. Palin, the former governor of Alaska, also addressed King’s legacy. “You have the same steel spine and moral courage as Washington and Lincoln and Martin Luther King,” she told the crowd. “It will sustain you, as it sustained them.”

According to Beck, the event raised over $5.5 million for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, a charity that supports veterans. Patriotic tributes to the men and women of the American military were frequent. Palin, who son Track currently serves abroad, said that she had “been asked to speak as the mother of a soldier and I am proud of that distinction.” She then told her critics: “Say what you want to say about me, but I raised a combat vet and you can’t take that away from me.”

Ultimately, however, it was Beck’s call for a religious rebirth that dominated. He urged the throngs to “recognize your place to the Creator” and to “realize that He is our king.”

“He is the one who guides and directs our life and protects us,” Beck said, his voice rising. “I ask, not only if you would pray on your knees, but pray on your knees with your door open for your children to see.”
