Like millions of Americans, Delaware Republican Senate nominee Christine O'Donnell has had trouble covering her mortgage and other bills over the years. Her opponents consider this a scandal. But there's a bigger disgrace: all the sanctimonious Democrats who've exploited their political incumbency to pay for manses and vacation homes -- while posing as vox populi.

Vice President Joe Biden has a house in Delaware's ritziest Chateau Country neighborhood worth at least $2.5 million. He secured the estate with the help of a corporate executive who worked for Biden's top campaign donor, credit-card giant MBNA.

In 1996, Biden sold his previous mansion to MBNA Vice Chairman John Cochran. The asking price was $1.2 million. Cochran forked over the full sum. Biden then paid $350,000 in cash to real-estate developer Keith Stoltz for a 4.2-acre lakefront lot. Stoltz had paid that same amount five years earlier for the undeveloped property.

Stoltz told the Wilmington News Journal that "the residential real-estate market was soft" at the time he sold the land to Biden. But Stoltz was a well-off businessman who didn't appear to be in such dire financial straits that he needed to unload the property in a weak market.

Reporter Byron York looked at comparable properties in Biden's neighborhood and found three cases where homes in the area went "for a good deal less than their appraised value. In comparison, it appears Cochran simply paid Biden's full asking price."

Biden's office denied any sweetheart deals took place, but York noted that it appeared MBNA indirectly helped Cochran buy the Biden house through six-figure executive-compensation funds listed as moving expenses and losses suffered on the sale of his previous home.

To be clear, no laws were broken. These arrangements were simply a continuation of Biden's decades-long relationships with a corporate benefactor.

North Dakota Democrat Sen. Kent Conrad and Connecticut Democrat Sen. Chris Dodd made cozy arrangements with subprime lender Countrywide. Portfolio.com reported that Conrad "borrowed $1.07 million in 2004 to refinance his vacation home with a balcony and wraparound porch in Bethany Beach, Del., a block from the ocean."

Senate Banking Chair Dodd got two discounted loans in 2003 through Countrywide's VIP program. He borrowed $506,000 to refinance his Washington, DC, townhouse and $275,042 to refinance a home in East Haddam, Conn. Countrywide helpfully waived fractions of points on the loans. The lower interest rates could've saved Dodd a combined $75,000 during the life of the 30-year loans.

Dodd knew about the preferential treatment on his loans since 2003, yet denied that he was treated like a VIP, refused to acknowledge wrongdoing and encouraged government-sponsored mortgage enterprises Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to invest in Countrywide's risky loans.

Dodd also got in on a real-estate scheme for an Irish cottage and nearly 10 acres of land with William Kessinger, a businessman tied to his friend, insider trader Edward R. Downe Jr.

Downe had pleaded guilty to tax- and securities-law violations and was banned for life from the business. In 2001, Dodd helped Downe obtain one of the presidential pardons on Bill Clinton's last day in office. A year after that, as Irish real-estate prices soared, Dodd purchased Kessinger's share of the estate at a discount. He failed to include the obvious quid-pro-quo gift on Senate disclosure forms: Help a crooked friend, reap a cut-rate real-estate deal.

Prominent members of Team Obama benefited from similar, special home deals. Politico.com noted that the Clintons secured a $1.35 million loan from Democratic fundraiser Terry McAuliffe for their New York estate; Obama special envoy Richard Holbrooke snagged a sweetheart loan to refinance his Telluride, Colo., vacation home from the Countrywide VIP program; and Obama's close confidante Jim Johnson accepted more than $7 million in below-market-rate loans from Countrywide.

Then there's President Obama's own $1.7 million Chicago manse -- which was financed with a discounted mortgage from Northern Trust and included a shady land swap with convicted felon donor/developer Tony Rezko. A report released by the Federal Election Commission in February 2009 underscored that the Obamas received reduced loan rates (saving $300 a month, or $108,000 over the life of a 30-year loan) because of their high-profile positions.

GOP candidates like O'Donnell, who've weathered personal financial troubles, have a lot more in common with the 14 million Americans underwater on their mortgages than these privileged Beltway boys. Perhaps Democrats in crony-funded houses should put down their stones.

Take that, Velma Hart. Those who saw Hart, a middle-class, African-American mother of two, confront President Barack Obama at a CNBC town-hall meeting last week thought they had heard a genuine voice of dismay at the state of the economy and Obama’s failure to deliver on his golden promises.

If we take Hart as representative of the public mood, though, Kerry must have instead discerned a clueless complainer. If only Hart were sufficiently plugged in, she’d have the sense to get over her economic anxiety. So what if she fears returning to franks-and-beans family dinners? Does John Kerry carp when he’s shamed into moving his $7 million yacht from Rhode Island to Massachusetts, where he will have to shoulder an additional $500,000 tax bill?

Whatever else you think of Democrats, they are lousy amateur sociologists and political scientists. Whenever the public rejects them, it’s a “temper tantrum,” in late ABC News anchor Peter Jennings’s term for the 1994 electoral rout. Liberal Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson has teed up that tried-and-true explanation for this fall: “The American people are acting like a bunch of spoiled brats.”

Obama has his own theory of voter irrationality. In his view, if only economic conditions were stronger, reasonable people would be Obama-supporting secularists with liberal mores. During the 2008 primaries, he infamously explained that people in rural areas who weren’t supporting him were clinging to guns and religion because of the poor economy. He has attributed misgivings about Islam to economic anxieties. It’s the all-purpose explanation for any public sentiment that discomfits liberals.

Not far behind is the plaint that “the system” is broken so people are understandably frustrated by the “pace of change.” The New Republic profiles “disillusioned” Obama adviser David Axelrod and explains that he’s despairing over a “ferociously stubborn, possibly irredeemable system.” This is the same system through which Democrats forced a historic $800 billion stimulus bill, a historic health-care law and a historic financial-regulation bill — as well as lesser stimuli and government takeovers.

To borrow President Obama’s well-worn metaphor, the Democrats found the fiscal car in the ditch and proceeded to hit the accelerator. Republican Rep. Mike Pence likes to point out that the annual deficit figures for much of the Bush administration have now become monthly deficit figures. The public’s reaction against the debt and the manifest failure of the stimuli should be easily understandable on its own terms.

If John Kerry’s prognosis has any force, it applies to the dew-eyed Obama supporters who bought the fairy tale two years ago and won’t bother to show up at the polls in November. These so-called surge voters, many of them young people, are exactly the ones who believed what Kerry calls “simple slogans” — “hope and change,” “yes we can,” “we’re the ones we’ve been waiting for,” and other timeless gems of vapid marketing.

When the late Democratic Rep. Mo Udall ran for president in 1976, he commented after one primary loss, “The voters have spoken . . . the bastards.” That’s a great line, but a poor message for a political party.

I am in agreement with you about NWO but I have difficulty believing your assumptions with JFK and Bush.

You know Nancy Reagan never had the Bush's over for a private dinner at the White House.

She must of had suspicions of the Hinckley and Bush connections.

Now if Bush wanted Reagan out I'm sure he wouldn't pick a family friend.

Hope Dawns in Afghanistan:

In what seems to have become an annual tradition, American-led forces in Afghanistan have begun their fall offensive. NATO forces and units of the Afghan National Army are seeking out the Taliban in the hopes of destroying them in open battle. Thus far, there has been little contact [1] with the enemy. It is likely that the Taliban will choose to avoid the Allied forces, leaving behind roadside bombs and ambushes, at least in the initial phases before turning around and fighting back on territory they are familiar with. While there will be casualties amongst the Western troops, if all goes according to plan, ground held by the Taliban will soon be controlled by NATO, enabling the Afghan government to begin to assert control and win the hearts and minds of the locals.

Eight thousand NATO and Afghan troops are a formidable force [2], and will of course be backed by the full might of NATO’s aircraft and artillery. But to a certain extent, this is déjà vu all over again. The current drive by U.S. and Afghan forces is sweeping through the Zhari district near Kandahar City, the spiritual heartland of the Taliban. The Canadian Forces already cleared this sector in 2006. After the success of that operation, however, the Taliban gradually filtered back in and reasserted control after the Canadian units moved on to fight in other areas. It is hoped that this time, with the U.S. surge complete and more Afghan troops available, it might be possible to secure the territory for good.

There is some cause for optimism. A recent assessment by the local Canadian commander reported that the security situation in the district controlled by his troops had recently improved [3], a fact he credited to the surge of U.S. forces. The Canadian commander’s cautious optimism is in accord with those of his U.S. counterparts; even an official as high as Defense Secretary Robert Gates recently expressed [4] his belief that the surge of an additional 30,000 American soldiers into Afghanistan was helping to bring down violence and increase the effectiveness of the Allies’ efforts to rebuild Afghanistan and deny the Taliban an opportunity to return to power.

In addition to the surge, there are recent signs that NATO and particularly the United States are willing to go further than ever to seek out and destroy the Taliban, wherever they may be. In a surprising development, NATO helicopter gunships recently violated [5] Pakistan’s territorial sovereignty and invaded that country’s airspace. They were responding to an attack on a NATO base inside Afghanistan by Taliban forces, who fled into Pakistan after carrying out their attack. NATO helicopters hunted them down and discovered them inside Pakistan, a traditional safe haven for militants returning from attacks on NATO forces in Afghanistan. The NATO helicopters flew into Pakistani airspace and engaged the Taliban troops, killing at least 30, and perhaps as many as 60.

The Pakistani government has of course protested, but they ought to know better — Pakistan has its own problems with the Taliban and despite a successful counteroffensive inside their own country, has shown little ability to secure its border with Afghanistan. Sending armed helicopters into Pakistan is certainly an escalation over and above the usual missile strikes by unmanned U.S. drones (which also continue [6]), but is a logical escalation of the war. If Pakistan cannot close down its border with Afghanistan to free movement by the Taliban, NATO must do it for them. There can be no victory in Afghanistan until NATO’s enemies are denied their safe harbor. The missile and gunship attacks should continue, both to deny the Taliban their sense of impunity along the border and to impress upon the Pakistani government, long believed to be in bed with the Taliban, that NATO will no longer tolerate an open border.

The Democrats’ Desperation:

Thanks to the leadership of President Obama, House Speaker Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Reid, the Democratic Party is facing the biggest defeat in bi-elections in the past 110 years.

The modern record is a loss of 74 seats set in 1922, by the Democrats, at the height of the Harding/Teapot Dome scandals. This year, the Democrats will lose at least 80 House seats and perhaps as many as 100, and will also lose control of the Senate.

Currently, according to published polls, Republicans are leading in 54 Democratic House districts and, in 19 more, the incumbent congressman is under 50 percent of the vote and his GOP challenger is within five points. That makes 73 seats where victory is within easy grasp for the Republican Party. The only reason the list is not longer is that there are 160 Democratic House districts that were considered so strongly blue that there is no recent polling available.

There is no Democratic message out there. President Obama is heralding education — an issue never mentioned on the campaign trail. Secretary of State Clinton is trying to restart the peace talks in the Middle East. Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano is trying to enhance international air safety. Attorney General Holder is re-evaluating Internet national security taps. And a hundred endangered Democrats are scrambling about on their own trying to get re-elected!

The Democratic campaigns they are waging are formulaic. They make no attempt to defend the administration, but run away from it where possible. They never mention its signature legislative achievements unless to say that they opposed them. The words stimulus, health care reform, card-check, GM takeover, and cap and trade never cross their lips.

Instead, they are running almost exclusively negative ads. In a few districts, they have dug up dirt that they are throwing at their opponents. They base their campaigns on tax liens, failed marriages, DWIs and the like. Where there is a paucity of dirt, they resort to three pre-fab negatives: that their opponent favors a 23 percent national sales tax, that he wants to privatize Social Security and that he is shipping jobs overseas.

The Republican answers are simple. Candidates urge the 23 percent value-added tax as part of a Fair Tax reform that eliminates the income tax — a switch most voters favor. Some Republicans do back letting people under 55 divert one-third of their FICA taxes to approved investment alternatives, and most voters agree with them.

But, on the campaign trail, simply saying — accurately — that “I oppose any change at all in Social Security for our seniors” takes care of it. And Republicans rebut the jobs overseas charge by citing how the incumbent backed cash-for-clunkers, where 40 percent of the cars bought were foreign, the TARP bailout, which paid billions to overseas banks, and the GM bailout, where two-thirds of the jobs were overseas.

This is the sum total of the rhetoric the Democratic Party is using to stave off the biggest defeat it has suffered since 1860! It is a pathetic defense, easily pierced and defeated.

Now the field of battle will increasingly shift. The marginal Democrats — the freshmen and sophomores — are mostly gone. The seats of Southern conservative Democrats are largely already lost. Now the combat shifts to the previously safe seats occupied by many in the House leadership, including, perhaps, the seats of Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Banking Committee Chairman Barney Frank.

This new attack will force the Democrats to spend their resources defending their base and make it even easier to pick off marginal members. And, while Republican resources shift to the previously solidly Democratic districts, eager donors anxious to develop relationships with the new Republican majority will fill their shoes.

In the Senate, Republicans lead in eight Democratic seats: North Dakota, Indiana, Arkansas, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Illinois. In Nevada, the ninth, Harry Reid has been stuck at 44 percent of the vote since Aug. 1, when his Social Security/Medicare attack was rebutted, largely by americansfornewleadership.com, an independent expenditure group with which I work. He is dead in the water. His negative ads that flood the airwaves are not working, and the ads run by Karl Rove’s American Crossroads have him pinned down.

For the 10th seat, the GOP has five options: New York, where Joe DioGuardi is only one point behind Kirsten Gillibrand in the latest published poll; California, where Barbara Boxer is stubbornly below 50; Washington state, where the lead has seesawed back and forth between Dino Rossi and Patty Murray; Connecticut, where Linda McMahon has closed to 50-45; and Delaware, where Christine O’Donnell may yet come back and has closed the gap to 9 points.

And where is Obama while all this is happening? Proposing new initiatives on education!

I don’t learn about you, but I’ve been anticipating this day for almost a couple of years. There is a many good news out right now there: AFSCME and the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee committing to loans to fuel their attack ads; Barney Frank lending himself $200, 000. despite having their own money that they don’t know when to prevent spending, why should we expect they will do any better together with ours?

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be really something that I think I would never understand. It seems too complex and extremely broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!
