Would You Vote to Legalize Marijuana?

October 19th, 2010   (9743 views )

Attorney General Eric Holder said the Obama administration "strongly opposes" a California ballot measure to legalize marijuana, warning that federal drug-enforcement efforts would be "greatly complicated" if the measure passes.

What do you think? Should marijuana remain on the list of controlled substances like cocaine, or does it merit decriminalization? How can state law change in light of federal statutes?

Without question. This is a no brainer. Marijuana has been shown to be a known deterent to the progressions of glaucoma as well as an astounding positive in the treatment and mental well being of cancer patients.

It would add much needed tax revenue, free citizens from the clutches or organized crime and its dealers, who would lead then onto harder substances and would make for a happier and more congenial society that would be more apt than not to voluntarily speak to one another, in more friendly endless chatter. Hopefully, some of this endless conversation would be on the topics and issues that confront society today- and would seek calm sedate and "peaceful" solutions as well as lead to the same mind expansion in the realm of innovations, and social acceptance, and the arts, just as it did in the 60's and 70's the best decades America has ever experienced.

As far a violent crime goes, that's a laugh. The best deterent is to say something funny to them, and watch them double over with laugher- them begging you to stop. hahahahahahahahhahaha

Oh yeah, the 70's was a truly wonderful time with the Bronx burning!

And Haight-Ashbury, center of the drug revolution in the 60's was plagued with "overcrowding, homelessness, hunger, drug problems, and crime afflicted the neighborhood."

Yeah, baby, let's go back to the time pot smokers rule!

You're so way cool, John, if you think the 60's and 70's were America's best decades you must be toking even now.

Every objective study on marijuana has concluded that it's far safer than alcohol for the user and for society. Yet our laws and policies punish those adults who make the rational choice to use a less harmful substance when they wish to relax and recreate.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, more than 35,000 deaths per year are attributed to alcohol use alone, including several hundred purely from overdoses. ZERO deaths are attributed to marijuana and there has never been a marijuana overdose death in history.

Alcohol use has also been found to be a contributing factor in incidents of violent crime, such as domestic violence, sexual assault and date rape, as well as reckless behavior and serious injuries. Marijuana use, on the other hand, has never been linked to violent, aggressive, or reckless behavior.

We as a society have accepted the fact that millions of people want to use alcohol, do so responsibly, and believe it must be legal. So, if marijuana is safer than alcohol, why on earth would we want to prohibit adults from making the safer choice? Why can we not have a system of marijuana regulation similar to that of alcohol that allows adults to use marijuana responsibly?

It's time to reform our nation's marijuana laws and policies, and stop driving people to drink.

Mason Tvert is executive director of Safer Alternative For Enjoyable Recreation (SAFER) and coauthor of "Marijuana is Safer: So why are driving people to drink?"

America's prohibition on marijuana has been an abysmal failure. It's time to end the charade and tax and regulate marijuana the same way we do more harmful, but legal, drugs like alcohol and tobacco.

After decades of ineffective and costly enforcement efforts, including millions of marijuana arrests and seizures, marijuana is more available than ever, especially to young people. Not only that, but by keeping marijuana illegal and confined to a criminal market, we ensure that an estimated $36 billion a year industry is controlled by drug dealers and cartels who are not required to check customer ID and who have few legal means to resolve disputes.

It's time we stop criminalizing millions of otherwise law-abiding citizens for using a recreational substance that's safer than alcohol, and bring marijuana's sale under the rule of law. Doing so would free up police to focus on violent crimes and other true threats to public safety while allowing cash-strapped governments to tax marijuana's sale while applying sensible regulations for who can buy and sell it.

If it is true that marijuana is safer then alcohol, then the obvious reason not to legalize it would be it is too easy to grow and therefore too hard to regulate or make any money on. It is always about the money.

Rand Study: Marijuana Legalization Would Markedly Cut Mexican Drug Cartel Profits
We believe that legalizing marijuana in California would effectively eliminate Mexican DTOs’ revenues from supplying Mexican-grown marijuana to the California market. As we elaborate in this chapter, even with taxes, legally produced marijuana would likely cost no more than would illegal marijuana from Mexico and would cost less than half as much per unit of THC (Kilmer, Caulkins, Pacula, et al., 2010). Thus, the needs of the California market would be supplied by the new legal industry. While, in theory, some DTO employees might choose to work in the legal marijuana industry, they would not be able to generate unusual profits, nor be able to draw on talents that are particular to a criminal organization.
Jon Walker has the true story of the newest Rand report, and how some of the intellectually dishonest “academics” at Rand are trying to spin it.

They use the worst argument fallacies imaginable. The government comes out and says that 60% of the cartels’ income is from marijuana. Legalizers say that legalizing will hurt the cartels (true) and mention the government’s numbers. Rand comes out and says that the government was lying through its teeth, but they don’t really know for sure what the real numbers are, but probably lower, and therefore the legalizers’ argument for legalization is supposedly weakened. And yet they admit that the legalizers’ core argument is true (that legalization will hurt the cartels – see above). Then they word their press release in such a way that they know the newspapers will report it as a blow to Prop 19.

The fact is that Prop 19 will be the first blow of many to the profits of the cartels, and it will be significant.

Thank you for the call to Abagail Storm, her computer is down!

And ALL that ALL of you QUOTE is from the 1611 Almighty missive of the Christian God: King James - VI of Scotland & also King James -I of England when England was brought into the Scottish Empire of the Britain's and given the Bill of rights from Norway that THEN became the bill of Rights of the U.S. as COMPROMISE for the MISSING Hueman Rights & Responsibilities TEXT within the Constitution FOR the people of the NEW-WORLD.....

This "Book" (bible) was written BY Anglo's for the New World and all of those TWISTED stories of VIOLENCE were NEVER there when read FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE UP & FORWARD......! It was the very much bleached Anglo's that started us reading from the Top of the page Down as NOTHING grows!

The US is a strictly CHRISTIAN country - so let's stop the B.S. and for the record>>>those twisted Anglo writings before the Birth of the Living Jewish Jesus that the Christians sent to their heaven in GORY-GLORY stories at the START of the Roaming Christian Empire’s and TORTURE is still a PROUD Christian tradition of ULTIMATE Christian LOVE!

WE as a Nation were being brought OUT of the Wall Street induced Crash of 1929 and not 'future' in sight. Almost a decade later: "Billion Dollar Economies" about to blossom in the USA! John Deere had built the proto-types for the mass production for the Plant that would bring the world into a future of true Capitalism: inter-dependent industries constantly blossoming NEW inventions!

There was a LATE TERM ABORTION and HEMP never entered Christian society. Read all about it in the February 1938 issue of Popular Mechanics. That ABORTION was brought about by corporatism ELIMINATING the competition of cannabis in 1937 at the behest of the pharmaceutical cartels and the Liquor Lobbying crusaders for the 'legal' Liquor pharmaceutical-drug cartels and here we are once again: The Republican's want WW-III the Toxic Tea Drinker's call it Armageddon-III and WE American's are at the FORK IN THE ROAD towards the GREEN DOOR and pass over that Bridge of Affordability with Trillion Dollar GREEN globally inter-dependent into Hundred Trillion Dollar Economies that are HEALTHY....!

That is the ONLY path climbing out of being DOWN-HERE and UP Jacob's Ladder that is woven of HEMP the 'magic' plant outlawed since we were trained to read from the Top of the page Down & backwards as NOTHING grows!

Marry-U-wanna the left portal and the Right portal of OUR body's brain that like our DNA travels with us.....! Cannabis NOW or stay locked in this world of SICKNESS - never absolutely never! De-Criminalize Cannabis and punish the ABUSE; the cannabis attributes to LIVING is insurmountable from medicine to food to TRUE plastics and all products HEALTHY inbetween the Start growing forward into the Beginning: this NOW Age of Huemanity within Society; in the NOW & not some distant unreachable future as in heaven with no physical body!

Yes marijauna should be legalized not only for its personal use but look at all the other many things it could replace in the market it is just as flexable as the soy bean if not more so, and can be made into many things like paper, plastics, you name it.We also need to legalize it so we can do studies and tests on its effects on the body that our gov. is dening. It is one of the oldest plants on the face of the earth yet there is more propaganda surrounding its effects then actual research backed studies. Give it a chance to prove its self, we can always repeal a law if is actually proven to be a bad thing!

Yes! Hemp, the real name for it, is the most productive plant on the planet. It has been shown to kill breast cancer cells among other cancer's too. Its the mega corporations that want it suppressed. Hemp can be used for fuel, fiber, that is stronger than fiberglass!Canada built a car made of hemp fiber! Food, it contains essential fatty acids in the seeds. We would not be here if the sails on the ships were not made of hemp! The forest industry would almost come to a halt! Burning hemp fuel does Not hurt the atmosphere! The founding Fathers All grew it! At the time of the civil war, was it was the law to grow it for all farmers! All Truth! And whats wrong with being a little high? It doesn't hurt a single person or thing. At least your not drunk or tripping or smoking cigs or beating your kids! Pot keeps you off those drugs and many other legal drugs too. Thank You.

Go Green! Why the hell not? It will create revenue and jobs. There are NO known cases of death caused by marijuana overdose. Tobacco use is extremely addictive and causes cancer. It does not help chronic pain, or people who have glaucoma, but marijuana does. If you think about it, marijuana helps the people who have cancer which in many cases is caused by tobacco use! Oxycontin is another drug that doctors can hand out to anyone yet it is one of the worst drugs on the market and I know of many people who have become addicted and some of those have died because of the addiction. Revenue and jobs would be a great help in this economy. Our Founding Fathers even grew marijuana on their plantations. Reefer Madness was a purely political move. Did you know that the hemp plant can provide paper. This would save many trees and land because the hemp plant needs 3/4 less land than trees and the paper made from hemp can be recycled up to 8 times whereas tree paper can only be recycled about half that. Going green would be positive on so many levels. At one point during history farmers were required by law to grow hemp for the war.

Yes, it should be legalized.
I know we would all be better off without marijuana OR alcohol but they are both here to stay so lets deal with it.
answer this question.
The driver of an on coming car is either drunk on alcohol or high on marijuana.
If you MUST chose one... which would you pick?
While both affect your reaction time and judgment I have never heard of someone who was fall down stoned.
Have you ever heard the line "he was to drunk to walk but he could drive"?
Neither one of these phrases apply to Pot.
To some people it is like an after work martini, a way to unwind and relax after work.
Martini's are perfectly acceptable since the drug in question here is alcohol and legal.
Think of all the people who have spent time in prison for a poor decision by our government.
We tried prohibition and that failed.
What did we learn from this earlier mistake?

Legalization is a tricky word. No legalization measure in America ends the prohibition of cannabis hemp. Regulation and tax or "legalization means the government will have more tax dollars to build prisons and put people in prison. Whereas ending the fraudulent unlawful unconstitutional prohibition of cannabis would secure our inalienable right to grow this blessed plant. We, the people must stand up and defend our rights and bring law and order back to our neighborhoods. Our prisons are overflowing with non-violent marijuana growers, dealers and users, ruining lives, wasting tax dollars, clogging up courts, draining our resources and corrupting our police. It's time to end this waste. In other words stop the persecution and false arrest of innocent people. Now we know that the essential oil of the Cannabis flower kills cancer cells and that the government has known this for decades. Enough lies. We want unregulated homegrown hemp now!

MikeG, fred, Maggie Mama, Big Bob and all those who think that Republicans have the answer to lowering the deficit caused by Federal Spending:

JOHN BOEHNER LYING THROUGH HIS TEETH HAS NO PLAN TO LOWER THE DEFICIT HIS CUTS WILL LEAVE AMERICA DECIMATED AND IN RUIN- HAVE ANY OF YOU EVER HEARD OR READ ABOUT THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE? READ THIS!!!

HEADING- As G.O.P. Seeks Spending Cuts, Details Are Scarce-
(GEE, HAS ANY OF YOU EVER TAKEN THE TIME TO QUESTION THESE LOCKSTEPPING SNAKEOIL SALESMEN AND YOUR FRONTMAN JOHN BOEHNER WHO TRIPLED THE NATIONAL DEFICIT UNDER YOUR WATCH OR IS A FOX NEWS "SOUNDBYTE" AND LOUD MOUTH BITCHING AND MOANING ALL YOU HAVE TO STAND ON?)

THE ARTICLE:
"Calculations by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office and other independent fiscal experts show that the $1.1 trillion cost over the next 10 years of the Medicare prescription drug program [AKA/THE BUSH PLAN], which the Republican-controlled Congress adopted in 2003, by itself "would add more to the deficit than the combined costs of the bailout, the stimulus and the health care law." HMMMMMM! IMAGINE- THAT'S FACT, NOT HERESAY.

... The parties share blame for the current fiscal situation, but federal budget statistics show that Republican policies over the last decade, and the cost of the two wars, added far more to the deficit than initiatives approved by the Democratic Congress since 2006, giving voters reason to be skeptical of campaign promises.

Calculations by the *nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office and other independent fiscal experts show that the $1.1 trillion cost over the next 10 years of the Medicare prescription drug program, which the Republican-controlled Congress adopted in 2003, by itself would add more to the deficit than the combined costs of the bailout, the stimulus and the health care law.

The House Republican leader, John A. Boehner of Ohio, has called for immediate cuts in “non-security discretionary” spending to prerecession 2008 levels. Independent analysts say that would require eliminating about $105 billion — or more than 20 percent of spending by departments like Education, Transportation, Interior, Commerce and Energy — a level of reductions that history suggests would be extremely hard to execute. (Since 1982, nonmilitary discretionary spending has never dropped by more than 5.5 percentage points in any given year.) ARE THESE THE KIND OF CUTS THAT ADD TO NATIONAL SECURITY, JOBS, OR DOES IT HAVE THE OPPOSITE AFFECT THAT ADDS SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS TO YOUR TAX BURDENS.
BOEHNER IS AN IDIOT- ADMIT IT.

*At the same time, most Republicans are calling for the permanent extension of all Bush-era tax cuts, which would add $700 billion more to the deficit over the next 10 years than President Obama and Democratic leaders have proposed by continuing only some of the lower rates. YEAH, THATS WHAT WE NEED MORE WELFARE FOR THOSE WHO HAVE CUT JOBS AND STOLEN YOUR RETIREMENT CAPABILITY AND HAVEN'T EVEN PAID ONE RED CENT FOR "THEIR" WARS.

**Republicans say extending the cuts will spur economic activity, but that is hardly guaranteed. ONLY 220,000 JOBS CREATED PER YEAR DURING THE ENTIRE 8YRS OF THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION. AFTER BEING BAILED OUT WITH "YOUR" MONEY. ASK YOURSELF, WHY ARE YOU STILL WAITING??? TO DATE YOU HAVE ABSORBED MORE THAN 1.2TRILLION IN ADDDITIONAL DEFICIT COSTS AND THATS ONLY AN ACCURATE FIGURE IF THAT PORTION OF THE DEFICIT WERE PAID OFF TODAY.

And the cost of either plan is astronomical: Mr. Obama’s plan will add more than $3 trillion to the deficit; the Republicans’ plan will add more than $4 trillion."
WHAT??? OMIGOSH!!! Ooooops!

YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT REPUBLICANS WILL INCREASE THE DEFICIT BY MORE THAN ANOTHER TRILLION DOLLARS.
Isn't it about time, all of you put your money where your mouths have been?
OBAMA'S PLAN IS A TRILLION DOLLARS CHEAPER AND STILL PROVIDES HEALTHCARE FOR ANOTHER 40MILLION AMERICANS. YOU ARE STILL "PATRIOTIC" AMERICANS WITH INTEREST IN SAVING THIS COUNTRY- ARENT YOU?
________________________

MikeG: I know that you are more practical than the others, convince them if you will of "the lesser of the two evils"... "being true to their conservative roots",... "lowering, not adding to useless government spending", "keeping jobs, not cutting them. You know, the whole magilla... and lay it on thick.

Lots of things come directly from God's bounty but that doesn't mean I need to have direct contact with any of it:

Here's a sincere hope that you never have the misfortune of contracting cancer or glaucoma in this lifetime.

PS- Has any your long term memory returned yet? Just wondering.

Common sense would suggest that you might want to read when you can't remember things accurately, learn to tamper down non-sensical rants about things you obviously know so little about, as to why the Bronx and other neighborhoods fell into disrepair.

It's more rational reasons include joblessness, absentee landlords, and "arson" by realtors who couldn't evict tenants who passed down low rent stabilized apartments to their children.

Pot had nothing to do with increasing your myopic phoebias. The Rockefeller Drug Laws and its promotion to increase government revenue while cutting essential services did that. Not sure. Look it up. Test my memory.
