Can Cuomo Turn New York Around?

January 5th, 2011   (255 views )

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Saying "government should be responsive to
the needs at the time," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo promises a
different kind of State of the State address on Wednesday, one less
about political pageantry and more about governing in a crisis.
Cuomo said he will use his first opportunity for speech to cast
himself as the hard-fisted manager needed to lead New York out of
more than two years of fiscal crisis, with $11 billion in current
and future deficits still ahead.
He said he will consolidate the hundreds of state agencies,
departments and authorities to save money and run more efficiently,
while leaving open the question of additional public worker layoffs
beyond the 900 he's carrying out.
But the most anticipated remarks may be those of powerful
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. Silver's support is essential for
Cuomo's plans to cut spending, establish a 2 percent cap on the
growth of property taxes, enact nonpartisan redistricting of
election districts for the next 10 years so majority parties don't
protect their power, and other key proposals.
"I am going to say unequivocally in the speech that we will
pass a property tax cap, us and the governor working together
trying to find common ground," Silver told The Associated Press.
"And the Assembly will pass a reform of the redistricting
process."
He also said he will support Cuomo's plan to cut state spending.
"There is no doubt in anybody's mind that we have to restrain
spending as a result of the economic crisis going forward," said
Silver, a Democrat like Cuomo. "We will have to fill a gap of $10
billion. It's obvious there have to be cuts to fill that gap."
Cuomo moved the site of Wednesday afternoon's speech to the
Empire Plaza convention center, able to hold 2,000 people, or twice
as many as the traditional venue for the annual speeches, the
Assembly chambers. Seeking to work with the Legislature that has
derailed Govs. Eliot Spitzer and David Paterson before him, Cuomo
has provided unprecedented time to the Senate and Assembly leaders
for brief speeches.

So far, I like his approach, if he is sincere. Tough like Christie with spending cuts but unlike Christie, he seems willing to lead by example, even cutting his own salary. It is still very early but perhaps there is hope. Time will tell.

We already had 12 years of Daddy Cuomo and 12 years of George Pataki and New York is still in a mess.

The system is corrupt in Albany.

An Answer to 2011's Austerity Arguments: 'We Won't Pay For Their Crisis'
January 3, 2011 / First, Washington squandered our tax dollars enriching the corporate contractors that profiteer upon unnecessary and seemingly endless wars. The cost figure just for the Iraq imbroglio is now far in excess of $3 trillion, according to The Washington Post.
Next, Washington bailed out the big banks and the multinational corporations that got so greedy they wrecked themselves and the U.S. economy. How much dod that cost? In addition to the initial $800 billion shifted their way by President Bush and the Congress in 2008, there's the little matter of the Federal Reserve's "backdoor bailout": low-interest loans and other deals doled out to the largest banks and corporatuions. According to data obtained by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, the 21,000 transactions from December 2007 through July 2010 that totaled more than $3 trillion.
Three trillion here, three trillion there... sooner or later, we're talking about real money.
And a real big hole in the federal budget.

I have faith in our Good Lord but that's where it ends.

I voted for John "Corporate" Kerry in 2004 and that was the last time they are going to fool me.

I'm tired of voting for the lesser of two evils.

Get ready for corporate Obama/Hillary VS corporate Mitt Romney/Jeb Bush in 2012.

If Cuomo can obtain the cooperation of some of those clowns in the democratic party he may be able to balance the budget and bring new york out of financial crisis. You can not compare him to his father because this is a new generation. It would be like comparing the 1st pres bush with geoge w. The first pres bush would not have gone into Iraq a second time. The last time new york had a budget surplus was when Thomas dewey was governor. Since the there have been alot of gimmicks to balance the budget. So lets hope the new gov will be sucessful in solving the problems of new york state.

Caspian, that's for sure and we don't worship politicians or trust in government for our salvation, either.

All I am hoping for is some responsibility in balancing the budget and a little more honesty in governing.
Too much to expect? Sad if it is.

As Senator Sanders says, “there is a war going on in this country…being waged by some of the wealthiest and most powerful… against the working families of the United States of America, against the disappearing and shrinking middle class.” Defenders beaten by “superior brute force,” to expropriate W.E.B. DuBois’ phrase, feel that these setbacks make it look more and more certain that 21st century America will resemble the Middle Ages despite a majority of citizens and all of decency fervently praying for progress toward justice.

What seems small comfort, but should be serene confidence, is the historical reality that justice DOES, in time, prevail. Usually this happens only after forty or fifty years of the pummeling of all hope, but the time does come. The fight for justice for gays in the military started in earnest in the 1960s. Nearly half a century later, abruptly, surprisingly, it’s here. Basic protection from personal financial ruin on top of illness seemed a no-brainer since forever, but it took more than a half century to finally get a horribly compromised foot-in-the-door medical insurance reform bill passed. Even if it does get destroyed by the nakedly anti-social/pro-corporate army of enemies of the non-wealthy, the bill’s existence, however brief, would assure ultimate and permanent victory later.

Societies always take incredibly long to achieve small steps toward social justice. There is a force of obstructionists, foot-draggers (and knuckle-draggers?) in every society insisting, like the Neanderthals who became extinct as a result of this trait, that progress is bad and scary, and remain tenaciously reactionary in all things. Short of our quasi-Neanderthals forming their own, separate confederacy, we have no choice but to be supremely patient, more than anyone should ever have to be, but that’s what we’re stuck with.

Mike G. Very Sad, But Very True!

The only people represented in Congress are the wealthy few who own most of Washington DC.

Already the rank and file Tea Bags were thrown under the bus by corporate Republicans who run Congress.

You are a cut above all the rest, and that certainly includes me.

BUT, BUT, BUT, FDR implemented massive changes to benefit the masses of Americans in only 11 months.

Obama's whole administration is Wall Street and the ones that are leaving are being replaced with more Wall Street.

That is change NOBODY should believe in.

Whats in a word or a name? "The mighty Quinn" rings better then "The mighty Quackenbush" yet few can argue, the man has substance, in the way he writes. In a similar way, words like "Social Justice" sound good but it's substance that matters. Just because government passes a health care bill and claims it is good for us, does not make it so. Justice in society demands that WE answer that question ourselves.

So as a whole in society, are we better off with this health care reform? If the answer is 'yes' then it is a step in the right direction but if the answer is 'no' then justice would demand we repeal it and start over. Those who believe in government first might view repeal as "obstructing justice" but those that believe in individual rights first, would see this as "defending justice." Defending ones rights and the rights of others over the powerful, is true social justice.

Robert, NJ is the highest taxed state in the nation. Property taxes are through the roof. Some in the public sector are retired in their 40's with full pensions and medical for life. Many of those in the private sector out of work are paying for this. It is unsustainable.

So we need a governor with the strength of a bull, with the courage to address this but we don't want him in the China shop and we don't want bull crap.

Needed are across the board cuts, without touching existing pensions and without the arrogance.

Or maybe this is not that unusual? You ever notice the press seems to pile on? Several years back parents were in a panic due to a rash of child abductions. The same with the Flu epidemic, bees dying and so on. Last year major epidemic with H1N1 reported nightly, This year everybody I know is sick, yet we hear nothing. It sounds like the press just picks and chooses what they want to hype. I haven't seen one dead bird in my town, so as far as I am concerned, for now it's nothing but hype.

Mike G. I agree the mainstream media / rightwing media is mostly hype.

But this story of dead Birds and Fish is not hyped.

And the excuses are ludicrous to say the least.

Today some guy in Tennessee where many dead birds were found said they might have flew into electric wires.

LOL

Caspian, I just happen to see the attached article. As a science buff myself, perhaps this is one possible theory that might explain the birds. Use it in conjunction with the following link, to get the whole idea:

http://discovermagazine.com/2007/oct/birds-navigate-using-magnetic-compass-vision/

My point is, from man-made Global warming to using carbon credits to prevent it, we do not have full control over our environment. God gave man dominion over other species but we don't rule over the Earth. Some think it must be man causing this with some government secret weapon or weather experiment but to me, that's mostly vanity. I think this is Gods way of saying, "Hey, I am in charge, not you".

Very interesting Mike G.

The few things I seen on TV never mentioned Magnetic Compass-Vision or the Magnetic North Pole field is moving.

The corporate mainstream media thinks most Americans are too stupid to understand.

At this point Mike, you might be right or wrong, but at least you came up with a plausible reason.

Good Job!

Maybe you can answer this question for me?

Did the Chinese shoot a missile off the coast of California recently?

Our government says it was a regular plane with contrails.

Looked like a rocket too me.

lol
PermalinkPermalink 01/08/11 @ 09:27
Caspian, the attached link is what the internet thinks. It seems to be the most viable explanation but it does not answer this question. If the Chinese are testing ballistic missiles near the coast of California. Why is that so terrifying that it needs to be covered up?

Now, if I really want to go science fiction on you, that Pole reversal thing is a a terrifying thought. If the poles were to actually fully reverse it would probably result in a worldwide calamity. Quite often in the science fiction movies right before this is about to happen some billionaire creates a temporary means to escape. Some private underground city OR some rocket ship...hmm rocket ship, birds and fish dying, 2012..that's just crazy talk right? I suppose in the scheme of things Republicans in power is utterly meaningless. In the end, what really matters is our faith, which I need to think about more.

http://www.umsonline.org/2012/2012Pgs/Pole-Polar-Shift-2012-Earth-Magnetic-map-science-nasa.html

"The other thing that would happen according to scientists is that the Earth would not be stable during such a drastic change in its magnetic field. Tectonic plates would shift and move, earthquakes would happen, volcanic activity would be triggered, and incredible storms with wind and water would happen on the surface of the Earth while the weather patterns readjust. This of course would not support human habitation. If the 2012 polar shift is this drastic, yes, everyone would have serious challenges in surviving it."

"Even the Bible says in Isaiah 24:1, "Behold, the Lord makes the earth empty, and makes it waste, and turns it upside down."

Thanks Caspian for your compliment but you got me thinking and that is always trouble. I thought, how does the science of the article compare to the Word? Here are a couple initial comparisons and thoughts:

“There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.
Luke21 verse 25

"If a pole shift does take place, it is said that the axis and magnetism of Earth will be changed, the poles will flip ..When this happens, it is believed that the Earth's rotation will change as well. The Earth's rotation will completely reverse and will literally spin in the opposite direction. The cataclysmic effects would be that the bodies of water would actually move just the way the water in a glass would slosh if the direction the glass is moving is changed. All the people who live in the "slosh zone" would be subject to tsunamis and flooding.

“So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the desert,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.
Matthew24 verses 26,27,28.

Facts:
Weather systems move from west to east because water currents and wind currents move from west to east.

So why would the Bible specify that lightening comes FROM the East when Jesus returns? Am I the only one to pick up on this? I doubt it. This is probably not the forum to delve much further.

Mike the word Revelation means an unveiling. And today there is a great amount of unveiling.

The Magnetic Poles can definitely trigger earthquakes etc. etc.

There are signs all around and today man has the power to wipe out life with Nukes "WMDS" Bio/Chems etc.
