Does America Have a Gun Problem?

January 13th, 2011   (340 views )

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The deeper officers get into the
investigation of the Tucson, Ariz., shootings, the more they hear
about "two" Jared Loughners (LAWF'-nurz).
Officers interviewing people who knew the suspect are learning
about the younger Jared, a normal, happy kid -- and also about the
older deeply disturbed Jared.
Sheriff's Capt. Chris Nanos says that at some point there was
"something in this kid" that "someone could say, 'That's my son,
I love him."'
Documents released earlier show Loughner was judged mentally
unhinged and suspended from an Arizona community college.
Authorities also have revealed that Loughner also was carrying a
knife on Saturday, but didn't use it.
There's a funeral today for 9-year-old Christina Green, one of 6
people killed during an assassination attempt on Democratic Rep.
Gabrielle Giffords.
Giffords is recovering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Calling RNN a news program ROF,that's the joke of the day!!!!!!!!!
We have a gun problem,YES...not enough of them
Wouldn't it have been great if someone was armed and would have shot dead this POS before he did his damage??look at the money savings..a trial what a joke..only in America..this POS should have been dragged out of his cell last week, strapped to a wall and shot dead.
And NO I don't give a crap about his mental state,at least execute him tonight

YES! AMERICA HAS A GUN PROBLEM--MORE PEOPLE SHOULD CARRY A GUN! Someone in the area could have killed this guy before he killed as many as he did.

REMEMBER WHEN SECONDS COUNT, THE COPS ARE MINUTES AWAY.

GUNS BUILT THIS COUNTRY AND TAMED THE WILD WEST.

We've become soo civilized that most adults are children, unresponsible, which is picked up by their kids.

GUNS PROVIDE RECREATIONAL AND SURVIVAL VALUE INCLUDING EATING THE ANIMAL FOR LOTS OF PEOPLE.

MORE PEOPLE ARE KILLED IN AUTOMOBILE AND AIRPLANE ACCIDENTS THAN BY GUNS. DOES AMERICA HAVE AN 'AUTOMOBILE AND AIRPLANE PROBLEM?"

p.S. In the 1930's a 14 year old boy carried his gun with him on the school bus where he left it in the rack while he was in school and was dropped off at his aunt's house after school to shoot small game for dinner. This is a true story. This man is alive today!

In this over populated, high pressured competitive world of today, there are more and more ticking time bombs, people such as this guy the other day.

How can we afford more and more police with higher and higher taxes?

YEAH RIGHT, WEEKEND WARRIORS WE ALL CAN EXPECT TO BE HEROES IF ONLY WE HAD A GUN IN OUR HANDS.
Gun in hand we become invincible. 1000% more in control of making sound judgments. Authorize ourselves as judge and jury in a single instant. We become God!
THINK AGAIN! THIS TIME USING COMMON SENSE.
...Ooooops!

WARNING: YOU ARE VENTURING ON THIN ICE.
The operative word here is "could". Then there are the other more numberous other possibilitys that some might have missed the moving shooter and hit others in the crowd, touching off an all out circular firing squads of adrenelin induced and panic stricken amateurs shooting everywhere and anywhere.
Just because you own a gun, are liciensed and have shooting range experience none of which can accurately gauge a novices ability under fire.
IF HITTING A MOVING TARGET UNDER DURESS WERE SO EASY- THEN WHY IS IT THAT WE ARE STILL AT WAR? CAN ANYBODY PLEASE PROXIMATE THE TOTAL NUMBER OF BULLETS FIRED BY PROFESSIONAL SOLDIERS THAT HAVE TOTALLY MISSED THEIR MARK. ...OR WORST YET THE NUMBERS VICTIMIZED BY BULLETS THAT HAD THE GROSS MISFORTUNE OF STRIKING OTHERS?
What about instances where a weapon is not properly secured???
Point two- What if in the best case scenerio a person were to fire, and get the clean hit that takes out the shooter but, the bullet/bullets fired go through and through "killing" others in the crowd. Would you or anyone else here with this proposal be willing to accept "all responcibility" for the civil damage lawsuits for wrongful death that are concluded as the result of your actions?
In still other cases you might be providing an easy way for your own weapon to be wrested from your control and facilitate even more damage. What then? After all is said and done those bullets and any others taken from your person will be matched to your gun and your irresponsibility that dramatically increased the possibility of a catastrophic event.
DON'T WAIT UNTIL YOU ARE LOCKED AWAY IN A CELL BEFORE CONSIDERING EVERY ONE OF THESE POSSIBILITIES.

There were probably a few that had guns when the shooting started...BUT 99.9% of the average people,IMO, could not draw a weapon and fire a deadly shot at someone no matter what.
I watched RNN last night for the first time in almost 3 years and good points were brought up.
IMO:
1-No person should be able to out gun the police
2-Assault weapons should not be in the hands of the average person, maybe a gun collector
3-Huge clips should be outlawed
4-To own a pistol a real thorough background checks must be preformed and updated constantly
5-A concealed full carry pistol permit should be VERY hard to get

And YES I've been a gun owner since 1962

John, In general I agree with your comments. We think from the movies and T.V. that if we had a gun, we could all be hero's but even if we are trained it is not that easy.

BUT...there is always a but. If I am the one face to face with a life or death situation unarmed against a crazy. I much rather have the gun option and assume the risk. The guard that took down the bi-polar shooter at the school board meeting apparently saved the lives of many.

The real question here is how is it that KNOWN mentally ill individuals own guns legally? The system certainly is broken but don't take it out on those who are responsible.

This Country has a 'pistol problem'.Yesterday a NJ cop was shot 3X in the head and he died..I'll BET,BET,BET he was shot with a unregistered pistol.NJ has strict pistol laws on the books

There are some states that have to get their head out of their azz and make it so pistols HAVE to be registered
And ALL states have to go after the ILLEGAL GUNS and their owners and sellers of them.In states that make it so pistols have to be registered it's the illegal guns that are causing all the problems

And this guy had a pistol--HELLO

Since the previous question is closed because of a fatal error, I'll say my last word on the subject here.

"right wing media rhetoric is a lot closer to someone yelling over and over again, 'This movie stinks!'"-MG

Maybe, but "This movie stinks" doesn't affect people potentially the way "That screenwriter is the target of our anger, may he feel hot lead real soon." It would still take a nut to respond to the latter with violence, but not even a nut would be moved by "This movie stinks" to do violence, because there's no implied instruction for the suggestible to take action, and, yes, that matters. It's not that hard to say "This movie stinks" instead of something leading, and no one can then have any reason to point fingers if something happens, when there's no apparent instigator. I'm not calling for complicated restrictions, just for people to be more aware of their words and at least the plausible blameworthiness of them.

Caspian, we should be pioneers for truth, even if it does not entirely agree with our cause.
What an obviously slanted, one sided piece, by a media that refuses to report what the Tea Party movement is really about. If they did, it might not be as effective in trying to propagate their true agenda.

A football analogy is in order:

Suppose some foreign media reported that the NFL has no other purpose except to make money for its owners, who are all billionaires. That some of the people that go to the games and follow the sport, are extremists but these fans are in for a rude awakening when they realize the sport is not real but manufactured in order to make money. Suppose they contended the owners wanted to do away with the referees, so the game would be more exciting due to less rules and regulations, in order to make more money. And it turns out this foreign media, well they are none other then big soccer fans. That is almost an exact analogy of the piece you provided.

Now go watch and route for your Jets this afternoon because what I just wrote should not change your mind or stop you.

Okay Mike Q, I understand your point.

This is meant as a compliment, even though we are on opposite sides of most issues disagreeing pointedly, with no middle ground. I actually respect your point of view. Although I don’t share it, you admit your want bigger government, higher taxes, more social entitlements, more regulations, restrictions and controls, for what you feel is a more civil society.

I have no respect for media, either Left or Right that refuses to report all the facts because it does not fit their partisan agenda. If we can’t tell the whole truth, then it is no different then a lie. If we must lie to advance our cause, then how valid is that cause? We can have different values but our first priority must be honesty and their is too much dishonesty these days.

Caspian, again, the current owner of the Jets is a billionaire. Before him, the team was owned by Hess (big oil). The NFL itself is a business, a big business.

Yet, You, I and so many others still pay to watch, actively follow and root for a team. Because whatever business that goes on behind the scenes, has nothing to do with US or our love of the game.

The Tea Party MOVEMENT itself, has nothing to do with a Billionaire that tries to make money from it but everything to do with the everyday people who express themselves and root for responsible values.

Well good luck waiting for the Tea Bags to implement Glass/Steagall again so Wall Street cannot rob the Taxpayers in the future.

That would be my values and line in the sand.

Obama failed.

Tea Bags?

My guess is the same, they will fail.

I hope the Tea Bags will improve health care coverage and benefit more citizens with less cost.

Just repealing it is nothing but "SHOW".

I think you would agree.

PermalinkPermalink 01/17/11 @ 15:42

Caspian, while repealing health care may be an initiative for some. The goal of the true Tea Party is to get congress to act more responsibly by returning back to a simple set of principles it no longer follows. Nobody can guarantee congress will listen, only that if they don’t, every effort will be made to vote them out. In general these principles are:

Limited Government
Fiscal Responsibility
Personal Responsibility
The Rule of Law
National Sovereignty

Of Course, there are those who don’t agree with these principles, which is perfectly fine. America is founded on the freedom to choose. The only objection I have is with some that try to twist the facts and bear false witness because they fear that government might just start to listen and change their ways.

Mike G.
================

Limited Government: Do you want to remove our troops in 177 Countries and end the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan?
Bush and Cheney increased the size of government with Homeland Security and Prescription Drugs for Seniors. The Bush No Child Left Behind was not funded.

Fiscal Responsibility: Do you think the Congress is going to cut their pay? Stop taking corporate lobbyist money?

Personal Responsibility: Do you think the Congress and talking air heads are going to stop the lies with Death Panels? Health Care Job Killer? Death Tax? Obama is a Muslim/Communist/Socialist born in Kenya?

The Rule of Law: Do you think Congress is going to take out the Loopholes in legislation that the corporate lobbyist want in? Congress finds ways around the laws or changes it.

National Sovereignty: Do you think Congress is going to close the Mexican border and destroy NAFTA?
You heard of the Euro? Get ready for the Amero.

P.S. I'm laughing now Mike G. but certainly nothing I wrote is funny.

P.S.S. Your goals are admirable but not achievable.

The Liberals were thrown under the bus by Obama and his corporate administration and your Tea Bag rank and file will also.

Most of the Tea Bags elected to Congress just hired Wall Street lobbyist to work for them in Congress.

VERY, SAD, BUT VERY TRUE!
