Who would take care of these people who can't take care of themselves, if not the state? Or maybe we should sell them by the pound to profit-seekers? Private investors will only take on public albatrosses if the state guarantees that the investors can take their profit and pass on the losses to the taxpayer. While such institutions are not too BIG to fail, they are too IMPORTANT to be allowed to fail. And so the taxpayer pays not only for the care of people, but also for the profit of investors who are only in it for your bucks.

And developmentally disabled does not mean comatose, so the place they will be living out their life should be a human community, and not a cold housing warehouse. It needn't cost more money, but does call for imagination and empathy.

HOW CAN ANYBODY CALL A DEVELOPMENTAL CENTER A WAREHOUSE? I HAVE A SISTER IN WOODBRIDGE DEVELOPMENTAL CENTER WHO WILL NEVER BE A CANDIDATE FOR COMMUNITY PLACEMENT. OUR CHOICE! WHY BECAUSE SHE HAS BEHAVIORS THAT WOULD MAKE THAT IMPOSSIBLE. THE STAFF GIVES MY SISTER CARE THAT SHE WOULD NEVER HAVE IN A GROUP HOME .STOP TRYING TO TELL ALL OF US WHO KNOW BETTER GROUP HOMES ARE NOT THE ANSWER FOR EVERYONE. WE WILL FIGHT ANY DECISION TO PLACE HER IN A GROUP HOME IN THE COURT SYSTEM. THE REAL QUESTION IS WHY ARE SO MANY PEOPLE TRYING SO HARD TO SELL THE GROUP HOME IDEA? WHO PROFITS FROM THAT? NOT MY SISTER.MY PARENTS RAISED HER TILL THEY WERE 80 YEARS OLD AT NO COST TO THE TAXPAYERS. WE WILL DECIDE WHAT IS RIGHT FOR HER AND NOT BE DICTATED TO BY PEOPLE WHO DONT HAVE A CLUE ABOUT DEVELOPMENTAL CENTERS!!!!

"GROUP HOMES ARE NOT THE ANSWER FOR EVERYONE."

No, not at all. Whatever is appropriate on a person by person basis. The family home can be the best place, or not, and that should be a family decision. But when that can't be, we need institutions. Some people do better in a group home than in a more controlled environment.

I was just shuddering about the cold places I saw years ago, and don't want some cost-cutting push to bring them back.
